Feature 2 | OFFSHORE SUPPORT VESSELS
Damen’s first twin Axe catamaran takes to the water
Damen has launched its first-ever twin Axe catamaran, the High-Speed Support Vessel (HSSV) 2610, Marineco Shamal. Te design offers improved seakeeping capabilities and lower fuel consumption, reports Nicola Stuart.
E
dinburgh-based Marineco UK will be the first to operate the new Damen-built HSSV 2610 and a
second vessel, Marineco Mariah, is set to be delivered by the end of December 2011. With an already extensive fleet of Damen vessels, the enhanced capabilities of the two new Damen-built HSSV 2610s will put Marineco UK in a firm position to move into offshore wind farm support. Development within the renewable energy
sector is driving growth in the offshore wind industry; with this comes the need for vessels capable of transferring crew to, and supplying, offshore wind farm installations in oſten difficult sea conditions. According to Damen sales manager for
Europe, Martjin Smit: “Te market has been looking for a vessel that can continue to operate in higher sea states, while at the same time offering lower fuel consumption. Now we have proven the concept in model tests and this vessel is reality.” Te new HSSV 2610-design vessel is 26m
in length overall, with a beam of 10m. Te twin Axebow hull, based on Damen’s Sea Axe concept, and raised work deck, enables the vessel to maintain speed in higher sea states. Tis, according to Smit, is crucial in greatly extending the operating window of the support vessel. Te shape of the Axebow works to maximise the waterline length and keep the bow in the water, slamming is therefore reduced along with fuel consumption.
Reduced fuel consumption The overall result is that the vessel has very soft seakeeping characteristics. The enhanced catamaran design means that it experiences far less resistance in waves, producing not only a much smoother ride for the crew and passengers but also conferring greater fuel efficiency. Downtime is also reduced through the ability to maintain speed in 2m significant

wave heights. In transit the vessel is not significantly restricted by sea conditions and limiting factors will remain rooted in the conditions under which the crew are transferred to the turbine. Te vessel has accommodation for up to four crew members and up to 12 transfer crew. Trials at Delſt University in the Netherlands
demonstrated that when operating at speeds of around 25knots and a displacement of 70m3
a 10% reduction in fuel consumption
was seen when compared to conventional catamarans of the same displacement. Te tests also demonstrated vertical peak accelerations of only 40% compared to conventional work catamarans. Latest figures from Damen put the HSSV 2610’s range at around 1200nm, which, according to Marineco, means the vessels are suited for all phases of wind farm construction and maintenance – in particular round three wind farms which could be as far as 150nm offshore. The HSSV 2610’s deck cargo capacity
is 15tonnes, making the vessel suitable for a variety of cargoes, including containers. Te HSSV is also fitted with a fuel transfer system enabling it be used to transfer fuel to wind turbines. SBI
