Bombardier unveils new locomotive concept
Introduced by Bombardier was a concept for a variant of its highly successful TRAXX electric locomotive aimed at the UK market. The ‘TRAXX P200 AC UK with Last Mile’ is aimed both at passenger operators that might soon need to replace existing traction and at rail freight companies planning to take advantage of further electrification of Britain’s main line network. The Greater Anglia
franchise, which includes the London-Norwich line, is one of the businesses identified as a possible candidate for new electric locomotives. Here, the existing Class 90 machines potentially will become life-expired well before the Mark 3 coaches they haul. The 5,600 kW TRAXX P200 AC UK is envisaged
as a 200 km/h locomotive compliant with tight British loading gauge clearances. The ‘Last Mile’ feature is a small diesel power unit
allowing the locomotive to operate at low speed on non-electrified lines such as yards and depots, increasing its appeal to
freight operators. It could also be prepared for ETCS and equipped to operate via the Channel Tunnel into France.

Bombardier nets LUL signal contract
On the opening day of Railtex, Bombardier announced that it had been awarded the major contract for the Sub Surface Railway (SSR) automatic train control (ATC) signalling upgrade for London Underground. Valued at approximately £354 million, the contract is a part of London Underground’s SSR Upgrade Programme (SUP). The full scope of the contract is for signalling
renewal and provision of an ATC system for the four sub-surface lines – the Metropolitan, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City, which together carry 1.3 million passengers a day and account for 40 per cent of the network. Bombardier will provide its Cityflo 650 ATC innovative communication-based train control (CBTC) technology. By 2018 Bombardier will equip 310 km of track, including 40 km in tunnels, 113 stations, 191

trainsets, 49 engineering trains and six heritage trains, followed by a two-year warranty period. The main project office will be in London, with Bombardier sites in Bangkok, Helsinki, Madrid, Pittsburgh, Plymouth, Derby and Reading providing much of the product supply and associated engineering works. Bombardier will equip existing and new SSR vehicles in line with the new contract. Cityflo 650 is a moving block CBTC system
utilising modern radio-based wide area networks to communicate between the control centre and the train. As well as being able to be installed without interruption to service and to tight timelines, it can provide interoperability with legacy train control systems and can be adapted to accommodate country requirements.
