A Look Back 1984


• The Association


prepares to begin construction of Poppy Hills, 10 years after the first funds to acquire the land


were allocated. •


The Bluebook has an article entitled, “So You Want to Build a Golf Course,” detailing the stories of frustration many Northern Cali- fornia courses experience in their development/construction phase.


1993 •


The NCGA enters an agree- ment to develop a public golf facility near Livermore. Even at this early stage in its


development, the course’s 27-hole routing and name, Poppy Ridge, are already determined. •


The installation of computers is completed at every NCGA golf course, allowing members to post their score where they play. The Association announces a raise in its dues for the first time in 10 years, from $15 to $20 in 1994. The Poppy Hills clubhouse design

receives an award for design excellence from the American Institute of Architecture.


The Association begins requiring all club handicap chairmen to be certified in an effort to curb sandbagging.


2002 •


Also, a strict pace-of-play policy is instituted for all NCGA tournaments. •


Matt Bettencourt of Modesto wins the first of two straight Player of the Year awards. Bettencourt would win the PGA Tour’s Reno-Tahoe Open nine years hence.
