TP Lab Tech is a global developer and manufacturer of high quality, robust automated laboratory equipment for the lifescience, biotechnolo- gy and academic sectors.


From its UK headquarters near Cambridge, it aims to provide practical and innovative solutions to maximise the effi- ciency of scientific research. TTP Lab Tech offers a portfolio of products that minimise assay volumes, reduce material handling costs and put the discovery tools back in the hands of the scientist. Its strength comes from combining cutting edge science with first rate engineering. It has a strong belief in the development and production of novel, reliable, trustworthy products and maintaining excellent client relationships.


History TTP Lab Tech evolved from TTP, a private employee-owned company focused in the use of cutting-edge science and technology to design and develop new products for third parties.


Following on from the successful launch of ChemScan in 1994, TTP Lab Tech launched two products in September 1999; comPOUND®, the world’s first automated and modular micro-tube store and Acumen®, the world’s first laser scanning cytometer for cell-based assays. These were soon followed by the launch of mosquito®, an automated nanolitre liquid handler with disposable pipettes. These instruments con- tinue to be best sellers and even though TTP Lab Tech continually updates and improves its products, the original instru- ments remain in use today demonstrating their robust nature.


Until 2008, TTP Lab Tech revenues came from a mixture of custom automa- tion and product sales. As a result of a deci- sion made in 2006 to develop a new range of products, the R&D team which was already committed to supporting custom automation projects as well as enhancing its existing products found themselves extremely stretched. Therefore, in 2008, the company made the difficult decision to

In 2010 TTP Lab Tech celebrated the launch of three new products, Mirrorball™, a high sensitivity microplate cytometer for antibody discovery,

membrane protein crystallography, and LAB2LAB™, a microtube transportation and management system for connecting remote laboratories to a central hub. Mirrorball™ was designed to provide simultaneous multi-laser excitation to scan thus enhancing multiplexing of assays. Alongside the capability for label-free detection via a scatter channel, these fea- tures enable the scientist to perform highly sensitive antibody binding assays, cell and bead-based homogenous as well as mix and read fluorescence assays.

Moving forward TTP Lab Tech will continue to target its products for niche markets, satisfying the needs of the scientist. With several new product developments under way (to be launched later this year), the team are never short of ideas and as an employee-owned business new developments are supported by ploughing back profits into R&D proj- ects. Due to expanding markets in the US, TTP Lab Tech now has an office in Boston, MA, with sales representation, distribution and product support in China, Japan, India and Australasia.


LCP, the original mosquito™ instrument has expanded considerably to enable hit picking, HTS and includes a bulk dispenser making it the gold standard and instrument of choice for crystallography. Part of mos- quito’s success is due to its lost cost dispos- able micropipettes and TTP Lab Tech aims to expand its range of consumables. By 2012 its target is to have 20% of revenue generated from the consumables business.
