Vanilla Island provides two-centre options

BY JO AUSTIN An initiative designed to encourage visitors to stay longer and venture further has been launched by several ‘co-petitors’ in the Indian Ocean. With a common denominator of the
exotic vanilla plant which grows throughout the region, the ’Vanilla Island’ marketing collaboration brings together Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues, the Seychelles and Madagascar. Designated airline Air Mauritius
offers an extensive network between the islands and the two participating partner hotel groups, Constance and Naiade, which have a wide range of properties within the region. While Mauritius and the Seychelles
are both established in the UK holiday market, Reunion and Madagascar currently see relatively few tourists from the British Isles. With this in mind, and with an eye on
increased demand for adventure and wildlife holidays, the ‘Vanilla Island’ project will position these less familiar islands as ideal add-ons to a beach or spa stay in Mauritius or the Seychelles. Reunion is on the same Mascarene
archipelago as Mauritius and Rodrigues but is very different in its profile. The largest producer of vanilla in the world, Reunion is also famed for its 3070-
metre active volcano, its steep ravines, waterfalls and deep lagoons. Its tropical climate has resulted in lush vegetation and unique flora and 40% of the island makes up a UNESCO World Heritage- listed national park. The island attracts trekkers, nature
lovers, mountain bikers and divers. Naiade’s Grand Hotel du Lagon, claims to 'represent Creole tradition with a five star touch' whereas Hotel le Recif on Reunion's stunning L’Hermitage beach offers ‘friendly comfort’. Synonymous with the island of Madagascar is the image of lemurs and wild open spaces. The fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar is home to unique animal and plant life and its dramatic landscape of volcanic lakes, waterfalls, deserts and beaches make for an amazing adventure destination. Regular flights link the island with Mauritius, making it a good choice for a beach-and-wildlife combination. Constance Lodge Tsarabanjina is on a private island on the northwest corner of Madgascar renowned for great diving in a natural environment. Located 405 miles southwest of Mauritius, the remote island of Rodrigues measures just 11 miles by five. Encircled by a coral reef, the island is popular with divers and with honeymooners who want to get away from it all. Daily flights with Air Mauritius fly into the island's capital of Port Mathurin. UK tour operators are currently
being invited on a series of fam trips on selected itineraries across the islands in an attempt to put the 'Vanilla Island’ project firmly on the map.
