A thirst for education
WHY DO corporates spend millions on travel but very little on business travel training or qualifications for their travel managers to fulfil and go beyond their roles? We all know that we need to keep developing and growing in order to realise our true potential. In the current economic climate, where there are more and more demands on us to take and implement tough decisions and more strategic issues affecting our business, the need for personal development is probably even more important than ever. Since I started working for ITM &

GBTA Europe, I have been given the responsibility to manage education and training and it’s clear that both organisations have been at the forefront of education for corporate travel. That's just as well, because it is not an area in our sector which is well catered for elsewhere. The ITM has partnered with the University of Brighton to accredit the BA (Hons) International Travel Management degree where students are able to follow a specific business travel route. This includes a business travel module in the second year, a 48-week placement in the business travel industry following the second year of study, and a final year module focusing on business practices for corporate travel management. What a great opportunity for students to gain practical experience relevant to business travel and be given the opportunity to make a real contribution to the employing organisation. Employers can gain access to motivated, alert, energetic and well- qualified candidates for their future recruitment needs. In my role I support the University in helping students to find placements with

our ITM members and bring them to the ITM annual conference or the London Business Travel & Meetings show to learn about the industry and network. It’s always thrilling to see students developing and I particularly enjoyed working with one ITM member and one of their students to produce interviews showcasing the benefits of place- ments for both the students and employers alike. All this is great, but where is the continuous professional and personal development within our sector? That is where the GBTA and GBTA Europe is helping by offering a business travel management career path. It starts with the fundamentals of business travel (Associate level) for professionals who have zero to three years’ experience in the industry. The second level provides essential business development and speciality education training (Professional level) for experts who have three to ten years’ experience in business travel. And finally, the third level delivers the Global Leadership Professional programme (Executive level) for leaders with over seven years’ experience. To date, the Fundamentals of Business Travel course is being delivered in France,
the UK, Netherlands and Nordic countries, while the Global Leadership Programme (GLP) will be taught just after the annual GBTA Europe conference in the Netherlands from 21st to 23rd September. This is very exciting for the industry and a way forward in personal development for business travel managers at each stage of their professional career. About time too!
