TIME FOR CHANGE… For buyers and arrangers of business travel and meetings
THE BUSINESS TRAVEL MAGAZINE (Print) ISSN 1754-8543
Publishing Director & Managing Editor: Alan Orbell Publisher: David Clare
THE BRAVE new world of business travel has been aired, chewed over and debated during the last few weeks, first at the GTMC conference in Abu Dhabi and more recently in a wider context at Business Travel Market at London's ExCel centre.
Concerns range from policy leakage and the plethora of mobile apps being launched directly to the traveller, to who foots the bill for industry infrastructure (nothing new there!) and, allied to that, the money that GDSs make. While there are solutions mooted
for circumventing policy issues for the mobile traveller (see Sabre’s opinion on page 12), there has been little headway made for the more fundamental issues of infrastructural change that must take place. The spat between the GTMC and ITM is not helpful; if the various industry bodies cannot brainstorm at a table together then the industry cannot embrace this brave new world. Buyer Margaret Birse of SERCO makes a plea for buyers to intervene to ensure clarity and transparency as regards distribution channels. Read what she has to say on page 8. In other corners of the industry, things are moving fast. EasyJet, for example, has launched a product backed by industry-specific staff to woo the business travel market (see page 34 as part of our round-up from BTM). Meanwhile, we’ve taken an in-depth look at what low-cost carriers are offering the corporate market on page 48. Work is being done to manage and rein in meetings spend just as transient
is – read how one company has done just that on page 6 – while coping with unexpected travel disruption has become the norm; see page 10 for a guide to coping next time round. On a similar theme, our feature on page 27 tells you what traveller tracking products are out there, while car rental and hotel groups in the UK are the subjects for our two other main features. In this magazine at least, standing still is not an option.
