PAWRS AWARDS 2011 Terberg Matec

TERBERG MATEC UK recently attended the prestigious 2011 PAWR Awards after having been shortlisted in two categories against some strong competition from the waste and recycling industry. While Terberg knew that it had strong products in both categories, in the run-up to the event they were still half expecting to return home empty handed.

As the awards evening arrived, excellently hosted by Sky Sports presenter, John McDonald, Terberg’s expectation turned out to be misfounded as Terberg’s sales director, Bob Doust and marketing manager, Sheldon Hall, proudly made their way to the stage to receive the waste management product of the year award for their low voltage, electric binlift, the OmniDEL

RCV vehicle fuel consumption. For a typical 1200 lifts per day collection round Terberg estimate that the OmniDEL

L e will offer savings

of up to 8% for the whole RCV (based on real life urban round results) when compared with a traditionally powered bin lift.

Terberg Matec say that the technology applied to the OmniDEL to create the OmniDEL

CO2

All of which amounts to a significantly lower and PM10 output.

L e is now being transferred to other bin lifts from their product range. The company hopes to offer electric alternatives for these in the near future.

L e. The award was presented to Terberg by boxing legend, John Conteh, who entertained the room during the evening with humorous anecdotes from a life in boxing. Speaking on behalf of Terberg Matec, Sheldon Hall said: “The PAWR awards is testament to the efforts of our research and development team, everyone involved in field trials and those responsible for developing the awareness and interest in the OmniDEL

L e;

resulting not only in an excellent product but one that is already well known, highly regarded and sought after within the industry within a relatively short timescale.”

Terberg’s new electric binlift comes with a proven OmniDEL heritage that will complement the ever growing collective of alternative fuel and hybrid RCVs available. It is equally at home on traditional diesel powered RCVs. The new lift employs a safe, low voltage 24v DC power system in contrast to alternatives that use potentially dangerous mains level voltages. It’s also very quiet with a low noise level of just 57dB(A), just below the level of a normal conversation.

Because the OmniDEL L e relies solely on electrical power for its operation, it also lowers

Big Belly eliminates waste collection OVER 1000 BigBelly Solar Powered Compactor Street bins are being installed over the next three months across the UK as the Big Belly continues to cause a stir throughout the UK and Ireland.

The BigBelly Solar Powered Compactor Street bin is an American innovation launched in 2002 with over 12,000 being installed worldwide over the last nine years.

Here in the UK it is revolutionising the manner in which councils can now reduce costs and improve efficiencies in the collection of street bins.

The BigBelly Solar Compactor consists of a BP solar panel, with a 20-year warranty, which powers a 12v battery, which in turns provides the power for an internal compactor. There are two volume sensors within the bin and when the rubbish reaches a certain level, the sensors trigger the compactor. Each BigBelly takes up roughly the same footprint of an ordinary street bin, but because of its compaction capability it can hold a minimum of 606 litres, increasing to 800 litres of waste - up to eight times more capacity than the average street bin used by most local

authorities. In recent trials with Bath, Glasgow and Nottingham City Councils, the average reduction in collections’ requirement was 88%. An additional wireless monitoring system option is also available. This enables the BigBelly when it fills to 85% of its capacity to send an email to the relevant division informing them that it is ready for emptying. Kyron UK are the distributors of the product in the UK and Ireland. Don Coughlan, Kyron’s commercial director, said: “The feedback that we have received from the councils and universities that have conducted trials over the last few years has been 100% positive. Our trial units have been bought with repeat orders while fresh interest is continuing to grow. “Councils such as Bournemouth, Nottingham, Cambridge, Plymouth, Larne and others have already have Big Belly compactors installed.

“Since we launched our ‘Pay As You Save’ scheme, where no capital funding is required to purchase the compactors, Kyron UK will only take a monthly fee from the direct savings and efficiencies each compactor generates. “Our payment scheme clearly demonstrates the great savings in terms of cost and improved efficiencies and that is something people cannot avoid given the current climate of cutbacks on services.”

The BigBelly has the following benefits:

• Reduces bin collection costs by up to 70%. • It’s 100% solar powered by a BP solar panel with a 20-year warranty. Only eight hours of daylight is required for one month’s power requirements.

• An internal compactor increases the litter capacity by 6-8 times that of a normal street bin.

• It can send an email when the bin is 85% full. A website provides full mapping, litter volume, efficiency data and sends automated fill alerts to relevant crews. • Eliminates overflowing bins.

• Eliminates weekend collections. • Eliminates birds/vermin scattering rubbish across streets, car parks & beaches.

• Substantially reduces street cleaning requirements due to enclosed nature of bin.

• Comprehensively and successfully tested by councils for vandalism and for health and safety regulations since 2002.

• Average weight of bin waste being emptied is 9–11 kilos.

• All units can be supplied with anti graffiti screens and anti flyer/poster screens.

• Each unit can transmit Bluetooth messaging and provide wifi spots free of charge.

• Pay As You Save: The cost of each unit is only taken from the efficiencies and savings gained. This eliminates the need for any capital funding requirements and savings are generated in month one.

Kyron UK are happy to provide three one month free trials to readers of Recycling & Waste World.
