PAWRS REVIEW 2011
Sea, sun, sand and waste management
For three days at the beginning of June, the weather stayed warm and sunny at Paignton in Torbay, described as the perfect venue for the UK’s largest outdoor plant and waste recycling show. Richard Hunt, PAWRS chairman, reports how a great time was had by everyone who attended this year’s Plant and Waste Recycling Show.
and shakers of the plant and waste recycling world, be they from private enterprise or local authorities.

These are the people who can truly add strength to the concepts of reduce, reuse and recycle and they gathered in Paignton to add their weight to the fact that humanity must change the way it treats all resources, be they natural or manufactured and how to reduce carbon emissions as well.
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed back all our loyal friends and exhibitors from PAWRS 2009 and PAWRS 2010 as well as welcoming new friends and exhibitors to PAWRS 2011 at the best outside venue for the plant and waste recycling industry in the UK and Europe.
The waste management industry is evolving and new regulations have been introduced to reduce the amount of waste we all send to landfill. This presents the industry with a host of exciting new challenges that the government, public sector and private industry must now embrace and ensure they are complied with. The recycling and waste management industry is truly strong where cross sector working partnerships and relationships enable many special and innovative projects to realise their full potential, and by this connectivity, head towards that ultimate target of zero waste.
PAWR Awards
This was the prime reason PAWRS dedicated time and resources to holding the PAWR Awards evening that brings those within the industry, be they private sector or local authority, closer together.
The PAWR Awards were held at the Riviera International Conference Centre and hosted

by John McDonald of Sky Sports. The guest speaker was British former boxer and world light heavyweight boxing champion, John Conteh. At PAWRS 2011 visitors met the people and saw the technologies, vehicles, plant and equipment that will change the world in waste reduction, re-use, recycling and turning waste to energy as a resource for the future.

PAWRS 2010
In total, the show boasted an increased visitor attendance of 30% on PAWRS 2010. This increased footfall was no doubt a result of the new concept of inside/outside stands which gave exhibitors the best of both worlds as did the new waste innovation zone where their hog roast was a definite attraction for visitors and other exhibitors.

Paignton is without doubt a great venue for an outside exhibition, with many local attractions and inexpensive accommodation. PAWRS is a true networking event, both before, during and after the show as it allows everyone to gain that strong personal contact that can lead to many deals being struck.
Deals struck
Some excellent deals and substantial contracts were made and great contacts made. Julian Glasspole, managing director of Vehicle Weighing Solutions, announced the sale of 26 bin weighers systems with full under body weighing, RFID recognition and software with an approximate value in excess of 500k to Newham Council via Heil.
The MD was enthusiastic about the visitors who attended the event.
“We had a really good mix of decision makers who had time to see all the weighing solutions we had available,” says Glasspole. Jeff Stock, managing director of Stocks Sweepers, is also pleased with the show. “Darren Martin, fleet manager at Powys Council, visited our stand at the 2010 PAWRS show and asked us if we could come up with a solution to the problem of leaf cover on a large number of their roads. We came up with the new ‘Tempest’ leaf blower system,” explains Stock. “As a direct result of this development and Darren’s visit to our stand, Powys council has ordered three new Stocks S6400 sweepers mounted onto Daf LF55 chassis supplied by Gary Clark at Watts Truck & Van Centre (Cardiff), all with the ‘Tempest’ attachment leaf blower system.
“We are also in discussions with them to refurbish the three machines in five years time, again at Darren’s request and remount the equipment onto new chassis giving Powys a 10-year sweeper cycle. This not only keeps the council up to date with the latest chassis emission requirements, it keeps their sweeper

operators in new and more reliable vehicles and as the equipment is refurbished and remounted it also greatly reduces their carbon footprint,” adds the MD.
Paul Bicknell, director BMC, adds: “I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ on behalf of all here at BMC for putting on what can only be described as a vastly improved show. We all feel that is was noticeably busier this year.”
Extra attractions
The new two storey PAWRS 2011 pavilion with its top floor panoramic viewing of the exhibition and the seaside proved popular with everyone who went up there especially for luncheons and the network evening for exhibitors. PAWRS 2011 was pleased to welcome back the South West Waste Recycling Forum for their annual conference in the Redcliffe Hotel, Paignton. The local authority officers from that conference were VIP guests at the show as were all local authority officers who came from all over the UK and Ireland.
PAWRS staged a network evening in the pavilion on the showground on Tuesday, 7 June, and along with luncheon that day and on the Wednesday, 8 June and Thursday, 9 June they were attended by over 450 people from exhibitors’ teams and local authority officers. There was also a VIP suite next to the main registration area for exhibitors and local authority officers to have a break, quiet drink and to network with friends, colleagues and customers.
PAWRS 2012
PAWRS 2012 will take place on Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 June 2012 at the same venue that has now hosted such events for 27 years and is a unique location for all who exhibit and visit.
We look forward to seeing you there with our exciting new layout which will be on line shortly at
