CONFIDENTIAL DESTRUCTION of end-of-life documents and other storage media containing personal data has become perhaps the most critical part of any businesses data management process, especially since changes to data protection laws early in 2010 have given courts the power to hand out fines of up to £500K to businesses in breach of those laws. Businesses and institutions now have to implement and demonstrate their compliance with secure destruction procedures for their end-of-life data.

With this increased demand for high capacity confidential shredding systems to deal with the secure disposal of confidential data, UK-based shredder manufacturer, Meltog has responded by developing the new PS range of compact, powerful and efficient paper and data shredders.

Meltog managing director, Julian Heyworth said: “We have seen a real increase in demand for a shredder which is effective and efficient at dealing with confidential waste. We’re very proud of this new range which offers operators and their clients an exceptional level of confidence in the security shredding process.”

The shredding systems offer a number of unique benefits including compact dimensions, superior throughput, precise cutter engagement to limit shred length and an innovative control system which dramatically reduces power consumption.

Heyworth added: “Meltog prides itself in offering customers innovative and effective waste management systems designed specifically for their business. The PS range combines state of the art design with extensive field testing to develop ‘best of class’ confidential systems in each power band.”

PURE RECYCLING’S advanced MRF is now fully operational and processing co-mingled dry waste for Stratford on Avon District Council. Every year around 150,000 tonnes of fully co-mingled material, straight from the collection rounds, will be processed at this new 60,000 sq ft MRF that was commissioned in February.

Every hour 25 tonnes of waste will pass through the plant where the fully automated system separates, sorts and bales paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and cans to produce a clean marketable product.

The latest technology and most advanced equipment, including six baling presses, have been incorporated into the plant to make this one of the most advanced facilities in the UK. Paper and cardboard is baled using a Macpresse 108/1 press. Fed from walking floor

bunkers on the MRF the Mac 108/1 is capable of baling 15-25 tonnes of material per hour. Powered by a 75kW motor with 120 tonne ram force the 108/1 operates with a 15 second bale cycle.

“We chose the Macpress for the reliability, capacity and capability of this world class product,” said Mathew Gibbon of Pure Recycling. Once baled the material is sent to Pure Recycling’s UK partners who will further process the material in to new products.

TO “BALE or not to bale” That is the question. More and more sites have invested, whether on rental or purchased, in equipment that deals with the age old problem: getting rid of waste. One of the oldest and most reliable ways of compacting waste for transport is the use of balers, which turn redundant materials into a neat and manageable blocks, that are easy to transport for the recycling industry. In this age of reusing, reducing and recycling, balers are becoming more and more of a common feature on sites around the UK and worldwide.

The units act as a compactor for cardboard/ paper/plastic film/semi-rigid plastics and other materials such as textiles.

Balers eliminate the need for flat-packing and therefore reduce man hours and increase revenue returns for material, as it can (once baled) be shipped directly to reprocessors. Waste Handling Solutions is one of the UK’s foremost suppliers of waste processing machinery.

This includes balers/compactors/choppers and shredders and has seen significant growth in the number of balers supplied over the last 10 years.

With solid reliable ‘mill size’ machinery available from as little as £45 per week (hire), payback can be achieved very quickly for a smaller client handling say one tonne per week of cardboard as it can be worth up to £100 per tonne at the mill.

If you need to find the answer, i.e. ‘To bale or not to bale’, then WHS staff will happily undertake a free waste audit. “Making sense out of rubbish”
