PAWR AWARDS 2011

Held at the Riviera International Conference Centre in Paignton, the PAWR AWARDS 2011 attracted strong entries. Below, the awards judges pick out some of the winners and explain why they stole the show.

D

YNAMISM, INNOVATION and a ‘can do’ attitude were much in evidence at this year’s PAWR awards. The standard was set from the word ‘go’ when Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council won the local authority of the year award. The judges said they were impressed by the recycling initiative implemented by Newcastle- under-Lyme Borough Council that has resulted in a saving of £500,000 and a recycling rate that now stands at over 50% when only a year year ago, it was 27%.

In the first year of implementing its strategy, the council clocked up such notable successes as residents recycling over 3,500 tonnes of food waste and rolling out a schools programme to encourage school children to recycle at school as well as at home.

The importance of a positive message played a significant role in the recycling awareness campaign won by Birmingham City Council and Smurfit Kappa Recycling’s ‘Be part of Birmingham’s Paper Chain’ campaign. Partly funded by WRAP, the campaign focuses on the positive message that Birmingham’s paper is recycled locally.

This means the city’s old paper is turned into new paper in Birmingham which is used for making cardboard boxes. This reduces the need to transport paper from elsewhere, saving money and reducing carbon emissions. Creativity was the order of the day when it came to the food waste award. The judges felt that the ‘Don’t let Devon go to waste’ food waste videos, produced by Devon Authorities’ Waste and Recycling Partnership, which are targeted at young adults are creative, fun and will appeal to their intended audience, while still conveying the serious message that it is wrong to waste food.

Innovation in health and safety is hugely important for an industry where the Health & Safety Executive reports the number of fatal incidents are over ten times the national average.

Vision Techniques impressed the awards judges with its Crew Safe Range. Including a mix of reversing cameras, video recorders, GPS tracking, management systems, radars and auto braking, the product impressed the judges with its wide scope. When it came to the waste and recycling vehicle of the uear, the awards judges said they had no hesitation in opting for NTM-GB and its KG2B-FK.

Mounted on a Mercedes chassis, the KG2B- FK has been designed to accept three fractions of waste. Its unit comprises a 70/30 split rear loading body and a front non-compacting bin life for recycling. This year saw Ceredigion County Council conclude its fleet requirement in a deal in excess of one million pounds with the purchase of seven 70-30 split NTM Mercedes KG-2B bodies fitted with bar lifts to collect weekly food waste, other recycling materials and domestic waste.

The winner of the industry innovation award was BigBelly and its solar powered compactor street bins.

An American innovation, the BigBelly solar compactor consists of a solar panel that powers a 12v battery which in turns provides the power for an internal compactor within the bin. Each BigBelly is said to take up roughly the same footprint as an ordinary street bin, but due to its compaction capability it can hold between 606 and 800 litres of waste which is eight times more than the average street bin used by most local authorities. A clear winner for the industry innovation award.
