Camo Kev
55gms, 72gms and 76gms. The theme for this year was spices and herbs so the two girls were called Saffron and Lavender and the little boy Nutmeg. Despite being so small they must have been at least 3 days old as they had no umbilical cord. Amazingly they all survived and are now in a family group which is out in one of the grassed enclosures.
This year all badgers, adults and cubs, are being vaccinated against Bovine TB which is a huge step forward in the ongoing saga with TB in cattle.
We have already had 42 badger cubs through the centre and are really pleased to say that due to the dedication of Andy, our wildlife release manager, we have been able to get three separate cubs back with their mothers. He has achieved this by leaving cubs in a cage and watching to see if a sow responds to their noise and then if we have been totally sure that it was safe, allowing the cub to go into the sett. Andy has even got on film a sow
coming up from the sett, looking left and right, and then gently picking the cub up by the scruff, taking it back down underground. Whilst this is a rare occasion where all the indications have to be right, it’s good to know that those cubs are back with their mums.
Even though we have quite a few badger cubs, there is usually one cub that stands out and this year it has to be “Camo Kev”! This was a small cub with a broken left front leg. Strangely we had two cubs with broken front left legs brought in on the same day! He was sent into the vets and he returned with a camouflage bandage - hence the name. He stayed in the cubby hole as he had to be restricted but he had such a lovely nature that we all fell in love with him as soon as we met him. He has now left the life of luxury and is with a group of other badgers in our Millie Block. All that is noticeable is a slight limp but we hope even that will go in time.
Don’t forget, we are always looking for release sites!
