GENERAL SESSIONS Opening Address

“Federal Civil Rights Laws & Student Bullying/Harassment” Sunday, 7/24/11 — 12:30 p.m. Join panel members Peggy A. Burns, Esq., Marisa Weisinger, and Alexandra Robinson, M. Ed., as they explore the “thin line” between bullying and harassment, and ways to avoid being on “thin ice” when it happens on your watch. The session will examine the subjects from such perspectives as appropriate response to the behaviors, legal obligations, and training implications.

“Systemic Problems: Anticipating and Responding to Transportation Challenges and Issues” Monday, 7/25/11 — 8 a.m. It is best practice to address problems timely when they come to the attention of the transportation office. Frequently, the recipients of a transportation concern may not assess the concern with the same level of importance as the individual bringing the issue to the attention of transportation personnel. It is essential to have a communication system in place for responding to problems, challenges and issues regarding student transportation complaints. Handling transportation problems efficiently and effectively can avoid problems from escalating under the scrutiny of multiple parties beyond the transportation office. Join Peggy A. Burns, Esq., and Dr. Linda F. Bluth as they discuss this important issue.

“How to Be a Good Friend to Kids with Autism” Tuesday, 7/26/11 — 4:15 p.m. Thirteen-year-old Reno Williams has been spreading autism awareness through public speaking engagements in schools and throughout his community. He is also the author of the book titled “Reno’s World: Presenting Autism and Related Disabilities to Youth.” In this general session, Reno will give attendees a general overview of autism and describe in his own words how kids with autism may act a little different than their typical developing peers, but also how much they are alike. He will share ideas for things that you can do to make everyone feel more comfortable and gives ways on how to be a good friend to a person living with autism.
