Contract pricing formainstreamNAND flash fell by roughly two to ten percent in the first half ofMay, according to DRAMeXchange, a research department of Trendforce in Taiwan. Inventories also remain high due to earlier speculative buying right after the Japan earthquake inMarch, said themarket research firm.

Several factors will impact the NAND flash

market over the second quarter, according to DRAMeXchange. These include a slow season inMay and June, uncertainty in the global economy, demand for tablet PCs and smart phones primarily froma fewmajor

players, and adoption of an aggressive pricing strategy to lower the inventory level in June.

DRAMeXchange also points out that the

supply of rawmaterials for NAND flash was not impacted by the Japan earthquake, and themigration to 2xnmboosted NAND flash bit supply.

Upshot: DRAMeXchange expects NAND

flash to be oversupplied inMay, thus fueling price declines in the second half of the second quarter.

Supply disruptions of crystals as a result of the Japan earthquake and tsunami have caused lead times to stretch fromeight weeks inMarch to 12 weeks in April, reported IHS iSuppli, El Segundo, Calif.

Themarket research firmsays the

extended deliveries ofmegahertz and kilohertz crystals will impact the supply to devicemanufacturers, particularly cell phone and PC vendors. The longer lead times also could spur price increases.

These devices are used in a host of devices

ranging fromwristwatches to notebook PCs withmore than 2 billion units estimated to ship every year, said IHS.

"Because Japan is the world's leading

producer of crystals --major suppliers include Epson, NDK and Citizen -- the quake crisis will cause pricing for crystals frommajor Japanese suppliers to climb during the next few weeks," stated Rick Pierson, senior analyst for Component Price Tracker (CPT) and semiconductors at IHS. "In fact, numerous

Japanese crystal products aremanufactured in factories located near the epicenter of the earthquake or are situated close to the coastal regions impacted by the tsunami." Damage also was sustained at two

oscillator suppliers in Furukawa and Kanagawa, as well as at NDK, which produces crystal oscillator products in its Furukawa, Osaki-city manufacturing site, said IHS.

NDK told ESNAmass production was

restarted at its Furukawa plant one week after electric, gas and water supplies were restored onMarch 21. Themanufacturer reports that lead times for both crystals and oscillators are currently at eight weeks.
