Buyerswill havemore products to choose fromas suppliers ramp up their newproduct launches in 2011. Expect "game changing" products in the latter part of 2011 By Gina Roos
Crystal and oscillatormanufacturers expect stable lead times and pricing in 2011, although some say the industrywon't feel the supply-chain impact fromthe Japan earthquake and tsunami until the third quarter, if therewill be any effect at all. Although several frequency control suppliers don't expect
component shortages as a result of the Japanese disaster, some like Cardinal Components, Fox Electronics andMMDMonitor/Quartztek

report a lot of buyers requesting crosses for parts produced by Japanese competitors. "We definitely see concern bymajor customerswhomigrated to
Japanese sole-source products," said JamesMagos, COO, Cardinal Components,Wayne, N.J. "Customers/buyers are clearly switching back tomulti-sourcing ofmaterials. We have receivedmany calls and e-mails about the Japanese earthquake impact on our company." "We have no production facilities in Japan. Cardinal screens all
shipments to insure no radiation contamination finds its way into our pipeline because of industry concern,"Magos added. But Cardinal, like other suppliers, anticipates that lead times will
extend out in the second half of 2011. "We haven't yet seen any kind of impact fromthe Japan
situation but I think in the next quarter it will be felt a littlemore," said SashaWolloch, president, Raltron Electronics Corp.,Miami, Fla. "We feel that certain customers who have been buying VCXOs and OCXOs fromJapan are trying to find second sources and that is a sign of things to come."
Stable lead times for now
Most crystal and oscillator suppliers report lead times of six to eight weeks for crystals and oscillators. Lead times have shrunk at several companies after stretching in
2010 due to somemarket demand
spikes.MMDMonitor/Quartztek, for example, has cut its lead times from10 to 12weeks last year to six to eightweeks by adding personnel at its Rancho SantaMargarita, Calif., facility and adding a shift at a high-volume facility. "At our corporate headquarters in Rancho SantaMargarita,
we've hadmore capital investment than anywhere. That's typically for equipment such as programming, tape and reel, and laser marking, all of which will increase efficiencies," saidMark Stoner, vice president of sales &marketing, forMMDMonitor/Quartztek, Rancho SantaMargarita, Calif. And at least one Japanese supplier has said that lead times are
back to normal. For example, NDK reports that its Furukawa facility that
