Apple, E Ink, ITRI and Samsung earn top honors at DisplayWeek By ESNA Staff

The Society for Information Display (SID) recently hosted its annual DisplayWeek conference in Los Angeles, California, giving display and component suppliers a venue to showcase their latest display technologies. These include developments in OLED and LED-backlit displays, touch technologies, display films, touch interfaces, green technology, and sensors.

This is good news for those 53.7 percent

of ESNA survey respondents who recently told us that they plan to purchase displays over the next 12months.

This year's Display of the Year award

winners were chosen in the categories of displays, display components and display applications. Six awards were presented to Apple, Samsung, E Ink, and ITRI. Both Apple and Samsung earned accolades in two categories.

The awardwinners in the display category are Apple and Samsung.

TheGold Award goes to Apple's iPhone 4 retina display, while Samsung Mobile Display earned the Silver Award for its on-cell touch AMOLED.

How did Apple earn the top award? The iPhone 4 Retina display

boasts four times the number of pixels in the same 3.5-in. diameter screen found on earlier iPhonemodels. The 640x960-pixel Retina display also is said to set a new benchmark formobile display resolution, low-power consumption and image quality. Using Mobile in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the display achieves a viewing angle that is superior to conventionalmobile LCDs, providing an enhanced viewing experience for the end user in virtually any application, according to SID.

SamsungMobile Display placed secondwith itsOCTA -- on-cell

touch active-matrix light-emitting diode (AMOLED) -- display thatwas developed tomeet increasing performance requirements in industrial mobile devices. The touch-capableOCTA display integrates the touch sensor onto the display itself instead of fabricating the sensor on a separate glass substrate and then laminating it onto the display, which significantly reduceweight and thickness, said SID. The projected capacitive touch detection technology also

increases touch performance and response via themulti-sensor input capability that enables gesture recognition in advanced

mobile devices. It also is said to provide nearly 100-percent light transmission and exceptional outdoor visibility.

E Ink and ITRI earned Display

Component of the Year Awards. E Ink earned the Gold Award for its E Ink Triton color ePaper display. It provides the same reading experience as eReaders but now with color capability. Triton adds a color filter array (CFA) over a black and white electrophoretic display (EPD) film. It's highly readable in direct sunlight and delivers 20 percent faster page update times compared to previous technologies, said SID.

Second place winner ITRI earned the Silver Award for its flexible

substrate for displays. The ITRI flexible substrate, compatible with existing TFT infrastructures and processes, is described by SID as a novel inorganic dominated silica/polyimide (PI) hybrid filmwhose silica content can be increased to as high as 60 percent of the total weight, making it highly suitable for the fabrication of flexible displays. In addition, the flexible substrate can bemanufactured with either batch-type or roll-to-roll (R2R) processes.

The Display Application of the Year awards go to the Apple iPad

and Samsung Galaxy SMobile smart phones. The iPad earned the Gold Award formarking a new era in tablet computing, and changing the way people communicate, create content, play games and learn, said SID, together with a host of innovative technologies and powermanagement features.

TheGalaxy Smobile smart phones earned its Silver Award for

providing "some of the industry's thinnest, most responsive, full- featured smart phones," said SID. The smart phones also leverage Samsung's own content service, SamsungMediaHub, optimized for the best viewing and audio experience based on device screen size, screen type, video resolution, memory type, processor and sound profile.

Display showcase A host of new displays and technologies were highlighted at DisplayWeek 2011 including those fromDontech, Ocular, Optrex America, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba.
