Spansion Inc., a provider of NOR flash memory, and SemiconductorManufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China's most advanced semiconductor foundry, will expand their current foundry agreement to include 65nmcapacity and themanufacture of Spansion's 45nmflashmemory.

Spansion, SMIC extend foundry agreement Under the agreement, Spansion, based in

Sunnyvale, Calif., said it will prepay $50 million to SMIC against future procurement of wafers, which will bemade in three tranches over the next 12months to help SMIC procure equipment for use in Spansion's fabrication processes.

SMIC and Spansion have worked together

since 2008, when they began the 65nm MirrorBit flash memory process installation. Spansion also manufactures its 65nm products at its flagship manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas.

Spansion will begin transferring its 45nm

flash technology inMay, with production expected in the first half of 2012.

DRAMpricing rises nearly 3% inMay

Contract pricing for DDR3 2 GB DRAMs rose 2.7 percent from$18.25 to $18.75 ($1.02/1Gb) during the first half ofMay, according to DRAMeXchange, a research department of Trendforce in Taiwan. The average DDR3 4GB contract price also increased, rising by 2.8 percent to $35.50 ($2.13/2Gb). Some DRAMmakers have reported yield

issueswith their 40nmtechnology nodes, said DRAMeXchange. RMAswere issued and both quality and design flaws are being examined, reported the researcher. These yield issues could result in longer lead times. It also spurred first-tier PCOEMs to turn to

July 2011 featuring • Specialty Distributors

The Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA) has claimed the first industry-owned and managed inventory search website. The site provides only inventory from authorized distributors. ECIA distributormembers can list their

inventory at no charge through July 30, 2011. The inventory search is available

exclusively to ECIAmembers. The newtool is a key component of the

association's efforts to fight the sale of counterfeit parts, providing customerswith a

secure site to find authorized product, said ECIA. The site "only lists inventory that is genuine and backed by themanufacturer'swarranty." All sales are completed through the

distributor's site with no inventory offered through the association's site. The search results are random, based on search match and availability. Search results are not influenced by advertising or sponsorships, said ECIA.

other DRAMvendors to avoid potential disruptions in their own production plans, and to agree to higher prices, said themarket research firm. DRAMeXchange predicts that the 2GB contract price of $20 is attainable in the short term. DRAMmakers also shifted their capacities

formobile and server DRAMs tomeet increased demands for smart phone, tablet PC and cloud computing applications. The shift is expected to ease concerns about the oversupply of commodity DRAMproducts.

2011, PCOEMs kept their inventories at low levels, and in some cases, down to less than one month of DRAMsupply, said DRAMeXchange. The continued re-stocking, initiated in April, is expected to drive prices up.

Both Samsung and Hynix predicted that

DRAMpriceswould likely increase in the second quarter of 2011, according to their recent first quarter earning releases. Prices in earlyMay are the beginning of the upward price trend, said DRAMeXchange.
