Enhanced power management Who: Marorka What: Headquartered in Reykjavik, Marorka describes the North Atlantic as its home market, although it has agents and partners as far away as Korea, Canada and Dubai. The fi rm, majority- owned by its co-founders and staff , produces a comprehensive ship effi ciency management tool called Maren. The system is modular, with segments covering navigation, propulsion, trim and so on, fuller-spec versions include a ‘power plant’ module, which provides an overview of electricity production onboard and fuel usage of auxiliary engines.

Catching sun and wind Who: SolarSailor What: Australian company SolarSailor off ers two innovative applications of solar PV technologies to marine-propulsion ‘solarsails’ and hybrid diesel/electric propulsion, where electric energy is derived from a solar array on deck. The solarsails are fully functioning computer-controlled wingsails that can also collect solar energy and be folded away during storms or in harbour. Costing approximately $1m for either retrofi t or new-build, the company claims fuel savings of 20-40% from sailing and 5% from solar.

Hull fouling analysis Who: Eniram What: Hull coatings are a fast-moving market with potential for considerable eco-effi ciency savings through reduced drag. Eniram’s hull fouling analysis tool helps operators understand the eff ect of changes to the hull, with data collected via a vessel management system and relayed to the operator onshore, off ering information on how to minimize additional fuel costs due to fouling and plan cleanings for the ideal time.

Who: Ecospec What: Ecospec claims to have developed the fi rst and only three-in- one emission abatement system, that will not only remove sulphur and nitrogen oxides emissions but also carbon dioxide. The system, named CSNOx, uses ultra- low-frequency waves to treat water, which the company claims becomes highly reactive, removing pollutants. A fi rst stage onboard partial load test verifi ed by American Bureau of Shipping found reductions in CO2

of more than 70%, along

with a 98% reduction in SOx and 65% for NOx.
