Creating Climate Wealth investigates the opportunities for carbon effi ciency within the global shipping sector
S
hipping is a complex web of diff erent players with diff erent interests, drivers, pressures and opportunities for increased profi ts through greater energy and fuel effi ciency and the carbon benefi ts they bring.
Ship owners and operators, port companies and charterers and shippers all have a role to play in bringing even greater carbon effi ciency to the sector. International and national regulations loom, fuel prices threaten to keep on rising indefi nitely, and customers for whom shipping is part of their supply chain are beginning to demand better environmental performance. These drivers mean the time for action is now – and Carbon War Room is working with companies and organizations from every part of the sector to help reach environmental goals within a context of growing profi ts and new business opportunities.
Ports Port companies are facing unique pressures. They’re distinct from many other participants in the maritime supply chain in that their operations are stationary rather than afl oat, meaning each is subject to a single government’s regulations, aspirations and targets in the carbon arena. While ports do not consume enormous amounts of fuel, they are a vital component of the move towards low-carbon shipping. THE PORT’S VIEWPOINT
“Since 2005, Port of Los Angeles has reduced diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions by 52 percent. We’ve done this with programs such as our Clean Truck Program (requiring
newer model, cleaner-burning trucks), incentives for vessels reducing speed and burning cleaner fuels as well as numerous eff orts to “electrify” the Port. We also have a Technology Advancement Program and a green tech business incubator, PortTechLA, to help businesses launch
new green technology for the maritime industry. PHILLIP SANFIELD, PORT OF LA
