News...13 Focus on energy effi ciency Bringing capital to world capitals

CWR convenes DC meeting to discuss energy solutions for buildings Carbon War Room’s Green Capital Global Challenge team and the District of Columbia’s Business Investment District have held a gathering of municipal and private building owners representing management of 100 million square feet of building space.

EPA launches Battle of the

Buildings The US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program has launched the 2011 National Building Competition, Battle of the Buildings. Teams from 245 buildings around the country will go head to head to improve energy effi ciency and determine who can reduce energy use the most. Nearly fi ve million commercial buildings in the US are responsible for around 20% of both the nation’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of more than $100bn annually. “I am excited to see so many

companies joining our Battle of the Buildings competition and fi nding new ways to improve their energy effi ciency,” said EPA administrator Lisa Jackson. “We’re harnessing our nation’s innovative capacity to save money on electric bills, create a cleaner environment and protect the health of American families.” energystar.gov/ BattleOfTheBuildings

In line with the Challenge’s mandate to catalyze private capital into large-scale energy-effi ciency projects, the meeting aimed to facilitate transactions independent of government rebates or balance-sheet fi nancing. Representatives from off -balance-sheet capital providers including Clean Fund, YGrene, Transcend Equity, Green City Finance, and Energy Harvest Partners presented innovative fi nancing models including PACE Commercial, managed energy service agreements and revolving off -balance equity. During the afternoon, Scientifi c Conservation, Lockheed Martin and Hara presented their software-as-a-service models. Rather than deploying expensive hardware that requires large upfront investments, these vendors provide 8-16% reductions in energy consumption via building automation systems, continuous commissioning, and predictive software.

DC ‘LEED’s the way

One hundred and seventy-one projects totalling nearly 23 million square feet achieved the green building status of LEED certifi cation in the metropolitan Washington region from 2003-2009, according to a study by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The study, Green Building Trends, shows green construction

increased throughout the region during the six-year period. The majority (64%) of the green buildings constructed were located within half a mile of a Metrorail station. The study indicates that the overall number of LEED-

certifi ed green building projects increased every year from 2003-2009, with the numbers growing dramatically from 2007 onwards. The District of Columbia had the highest number of

projects (72) and overall square footage (12.5 million) of green buildings in the Washington Metropolitan region. Northern Virginia had the second highest number of projects (59) and overall square footage (6.6 million), while suburban Maryland had 40 projects and 3.8 million square feet of green building.
