It is in fact a very real possibility, providing opportunities for added value to consumer goods, while catalyzing a revolution in green ship design and operation. The Ecoliners by Dutch based shipping company Fairtransport bring together two separate worlds: high tech sailing ship features and commercial shipping. The technique of propelling large vessels with windpower has been well proven in history and culminated in the beginning of the 20th century. Due to rising oil prices and environmental awareness, the demand for clean shipping makes it possible to re-introduce sails in modern shipping operations. Trusting on diesel electric power to operate both rigging and propeller will ensure, even in headwinds, speed and trustworthiness. Ecoliners will use on average 50% (up to 90% in favorable circumstances) less fossil fuel, thereby reducing environmental impact and operational costs.
