Healing With Salt Therapy by Pavel Gershkovich
for decades. The therapy is called speleothrapy, for treatment in a natural salt cave, or halotherapy, for treatment in a simulated salt environment. Here’s how a salt therapy session
S
works. A room is completely coated from floor to ceiling with salt origi- nating from the Dead Sea in Israel. Fine particles of salt are injected into the air. Participants sit in the room for periods of 45 minutes or longer and inhale the fine salt while the salt makes contact with their skin. Treat- ments have been shown to resolve a number of ailments, including asth- ma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, eczema, psoriasis, acne, and arthritis pain among others. The Dead Sea provides a special environment that enables this heal-
alt therapy and the use of salt rooms for healing have been quite popular across Europe and the Middle East
ing process. Because its elevation is below sea level, the salt content is much higher than what’s found in the ocean. Fish and other creatures can- not survive in it. The high-density salt content can eliminate harmful bacte- rial and inflammatory agents while also disinfecting an area of the skin. The mineral content is found to
have greater saturations of sodium, potassium and magnesium, which help the body in detoxification, improving blood circulation, reduc- ing aches and tension, and addressing skin problems. Many research studies over the
years have shown the effectiveness of salt therapy. A clinical study published in the New England Journal of Medi- cine (January 19, 2006) measured lung capacity before and after a series of halotherapy treatments. The study reported a noticeable improvement
in the lung capacity for sufferers of cystic fibrosis, bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, rhinitis and allergies. Salt therapy is widely acclaimed and has been used since the 19th century in Europe. It has recently found its way to Israel and the United Kingdom, where in the past two years, dozens of salt rooms have been built, including in the private residences of families whose children suffer from respiratory ailments. A series of 10-12 sessions has been shown to make an enormous difference in patients’ lives. The effect on children can be particu- larly dramatic.
