The glottis (closes off the upper air- way)/thoracic outlet.

The respiratory diaphragm linked to your autonomic nervous system (ANS), the master system of health.

The pelvic floor that when tight creates stress (think erectile dys- function/urgent bladder) and when lax creates excessive pressure on the spine and bowels (disc problems and hemorrhoids). Got your attention now? You

breathe between 10-13 times per minute which equals 780 times per hour or more than 18,000 times per day. Breathing is a delicately bal- anced relationship among these three diaphragms. New research out of Australia demonstrates that if any one or more of these is altered, you lose power and effectiveness in the entire core. Further, when the breath- ing load is shifted from the open, free respiratory diaphragm to the thoracic outlet (neck/chest) that signals the ANS you are under stress and need to

MYTH of The Six Pack by Matthew J. Taylor

hat’s right, it’s a myth – a story that many people believe and teach, but has only some ele-

ment of truth. Think about it: nearly seven billion people walking the planet and functioning pretty well. And maybe two percent of the popula- tion has a six-pack set of abs? The element of truth is you need to be able to recruit your abdominal muscles at the right time with the right amount of force to complete whatever task you need to do. That’s it. The rest is a process of generating abnormal amounts of compression and tension in a very sensitive system of three levels of stability. These three levels (diaphragms)

fight or flee. Life itself tends to generate that

already. Add intense compression of “core” workouts, and you put gasoline on the fire of stress. In yoga therapy we teach you how to sense and recruit those important abs when you need them, but most important, how to bring the system back to balance mo- ment to moment through your day to correct all of the above-listed condi- tions. Holding your abs tense and firm generates anxiety and inflammation. “Real” men (and women) know how to manage their power and use it wisely. That’s what yoga therapy can help you practice.
