VIETNAM, CAMBODIA & THAILAND

At Cambodia’s Khmer temples, a photographer helps you get great pictures!

Lush, serene, golden lands

In a corner of the world that has seen more than its share of strife over the centuries, the people and cultures of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam cherish their serenity. It is what many Bangkok residents long for after a day spent negotiating one of Asia’s busiest cities... and it radiates from the gigantic, gleaming, golden face of the Reclining Buddha in the city’s Wat Pho Temple (not coincidentally, also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage), and indeed from the countless images of Buddha found everywhere throughout this profoundly spiritual region. It permeates the sleepy villages of Thailand’s hill tribe country, and lights up the kind, gentle faces of the people who have created and shared traditional crafts passed on from one generation to the next. It can be seen in the posture of a Vietnamese villager carefully poised at the edge of a longboat, expertly navigating the craft along the river... in the palaces and pagodas of old Hué and Hoi An... in the simple, practical non la, the iconic conical hat worn in fields, rice paddies, roads and rivers of rural Vietnam... and in the expression of a monk in silent meditation at an ancient Khmer temple reclaimed from the Cambodian jungle. And you’ll find it yourself, riding atop an elephant or aboard a cyclo, enjoying traditional cuisine, relaxing on a terrace in the Mae Rim Valley or on a beach in Da Nang.
