 The software market value dropped by 27 per cent to £16.4m. Unit sales fell by 25 per cent to 712,186. No doubt this was partly due to the Royal Wedding and good weather distracting shoppers.

 There was no change at the top of the charts. EA and Valve’s Portal 2held onto the top spot, and Mortal Kombatfrom Warner Bros is at No.2. However, 505’s Zumba Fitnessrose to No.3.

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT...

What exactly happened? An unknown individual breached the PlayStation Network at some point between Sunday, April 17th and Tuesday, April 19th. On Wednesday, April 20th Sony shut down PSN – the online gaming and download service for PS3 and PSP owners – to counter the attack. It was only six days later, on

Tuesday, April 26th, that the firmsent emails out to users warning that their personal details had been compromised – more than a week after the hack occurred.

What kind of personal details were accessed? The name, address, country, email address, date of birth, PSN login details, password and security answers of 77m users. And although there is no hard evidence, Sony has

THE PSN HACK

warned that credit card details may have been stolen.

That doesn’t sound good. Have customers been told to cancel their credit cards? Visa issued a statement to MCVsaying that concerned cardholders should keep a close eye on their accounts and report any unusual activity to their bank.

Others have recommended users change their passwords and consider telling their banks that their cards could have been compromised.

So who committed the hack? Was it that ‘GeoHot’ guy? Apparently not. Sony is working with legal teams, the US Department of Homeland Security and more to identify the hackers.

George Hotz has denied involvement. He was

previously taken to court by Sony for hacking PS3s, but this case has already been settled.

Internet group Anonymous also claimed it is no longer attacking Sony following this settlement. It previously brought down several Sony websites during the Hotz case.

So when can we expect PSN to be back online?

It should be working again in most territories today (Friday, May 6th). Sony will give PSN

users 30 days’ free

access to its PSN Plus service as compensation, as well as improving security and hiring a chief information security officer.

Anything else I should know? The details of 2m Sony Online Entertainment customers were illegally accessed on April 16th and 17th. This is separate to the PSN hack.

Sony is

working with its own legal teams and the US department of Homeland Security to discover who was behind the hack
