...............................................................................................................................................................................................................Nails - Expert Panel Do you think that gel polishes will

become more popular than other treatments such as standard gel or acrylic?

“There are lots of coloured gels and they all work and are long lasting, no one argues with that but they are more work and take more time.”

“Shellac is not a coloured gel and does not require all the extra steps and products that are needed when applying coloured gels. So if you must do a comparison then compare Gel Polish with the many other coloured gels on the market (there are stacks and stacks of them) but do not compare it with Shellac because Shellac is not a coloured gel and the two are not the same in any way.

“The reason that many beauty editors are raving about Shellac is that beauty editors are not interested in enhancement products nor do they write about them because of the damage they see inflicted from filing the natural nail before application and having to file it on removal.

“Shellac Hybrid colour coat is so incredibly simple, in that the UV3 colour coat system consists of just three products (base coat, colour coat and top coat - like polish) and goes on like polish, has the added benefit of wearing flawlessly for weeks (like a gel) and comes off fast and easy with absolutely no change in the condition of the natural nail. Imagine how easy that is for you in the salon. This is what Hybrid technology means that CND in their laboratories have taken the best attributes of polish, the best attributes of gels, they have added new science with fast release polymers and come up with something unique in the world of nails.”

“In my opinion, I would say no I don’t believe that any gel/ hybrid polish will diminish enhancement procedures.”

“I do however think hybrid polishes are a huge benefit to my manicure clients and my salon productivity. We all know the client that can’t sit still to let her polish dry then smudges her nails and you need to find the time to re-apply all with a smile on you face when your next client is waiting.

“My regular manicure clients do find it harder to justify 40 euro for their manicure and an additional cost 20 euro for there long lasting polish - so in that respect I think it could be potentially damaging to a manicure client.

“When I do a consultation with a client my first question is ‘Do you want to add length to your natural nail’? That is the decider for me as whether to do enhancements or manicure options. Again the option here is to finish a natural set with a colour hybrid polish - Normal Nail enamels last longer over enhancements due to the lack of flexibility underneath it, so would it be worth the extra cost to your client? If budget allows I would say yes, again here they would have the instant dry finish that that client would be ordinarily used to hence saving on smudging. What I do think will happen over the course of the next 24 months, will be a trend of hybrid polishes taking over from your standard file and polish. Manufacturers and distributors are getting bigger, meaning a lot more choice for the consumer, which in turn will lead to over all lower costs.”

“No, in a word I don’t. The only thing gel polish is going to replace is traditional polish in the salon”.

“Gel polish provides the same look on natural and artifi cial nails as polish, but with longer lasting results. However, gel polish cannot provide length or strength only colour. In the salon a customer will be looking for all aspects of nail services, not just colour.

“The gel polish service can be done in 30 minutes and brings huge profit into the salon. The cost of this service is usually less than €2 per treatment! But a good nail technician using good quality products can provide a full set of gel or acrylic for less than €3.50 in 1 hour 15 minutes, so all nail services offer great value for the salon. The added benefit for gel polish is anyone with a manicure certifi cate can pick it up easily in a three hour workshop, which any good brand should offer.

“One thing people forget with a gel polish is a consultation is still required. This product is not for everyone. It doesn’t sit well on some nail types, such as excessively weak or soft nails or nails with severe ridges. These clients should be offered a traditional manicure such as Nailtiques.

“Gel polish is an excellent addition to all nail offerings within the salon and should be thought of as just that, an addition. Gel polish is taking the world by storm and any salon serious about nails must offer this service!”
