Beauty - Brand Awareness .............................................................................................................................................................................................

The number one aromatherapy brand in the world, Decléor, have been formulating aromatherapy products for over 37 years and distributing the brand in Ireland for 23 of those years. Decléor founder Solange Dessimoulie talks to Irish Beauty about the story behind the brand…

Created in France in 1974, the Decléor brand, or Cléor as it was originally known, offered something different in the form of naturally sourced ingredients and essential oils, at a time when many Spa and beauty products were of animal origin. Yes they worked and were adequate, but Decléor wanted to offer something different – not only would it offer results, but it would offer relaxation and aromatherapy benefits too with the use of essential oils.

Today, Decléor has a presence in most countries around the world, including Ireland, South Africa, the UK, Israel, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Canada, the USA, and many more.

In the beginning

At the young age of 17, Solange Dessimoulie left her native Périgors for Paris, where she began to study to become a beauty therapist. Since completing her training, she has worked in laboratories, in training, in sales and in marketing for some of the top names in cosmetics, but, at the age of just 30, she decided to take the opportunity and strike out on her own, which is when today’s famous aromatherapy brand Decléor was created in 1974.

Solange named the company she had created Cléor, which means ‘the golden key’ in Egyptian mythology. “I believe that the woman’s body is a temple. I had a vision that beauty came from within to the outside – the temple. The ‘golden key’ was symbolic of opening the temple of beauty,” says Solange.

It was from her meeting with a doctor and pharmacist in charge of a hospital burns unit that she discovered that the products that were used to care for patients helped to restore the epidermis.

Solange took an interest in this product for which the main ingredient Proline helps in the reconstruction of the collagen of the skin and its various constituents. This observation gave her the idea of using Proline as a basis for a range of beauty products.

Solange Dessimoulie

Production first began in the back of a garage in the Paris region, surrounded by test tubes and apparatus, using a 5kg pressure cooker. The company began to take off and to meet the demand and realise her new ideas, Solange took on a chemist, a technician, a doctor and notably an aromatherapist, Caroline Colliard.

The first product to be developed was Aromessence™, which is still one of the most popular products of the brand today.

Today, Solange is still at the heart of the Decléor brand and it’s quite obvious that she loves what she does. Solonge has always believed that it’s not all about the product, it’s the way that you apply the product too, and this is what she likes to teach her clients. “Products can be good, but if you take the time to apply them properly, focus on the different pressure points of the face and body, they will be more effective.

“We provide diagrams for all of our clients to show them how pressure points in the face link to the organs and how the products should be applied,” says Solange.

Decléor now has a presence in over 80 countries and offers a broad product range for the face and body, men, suncare products and solution products.

1974 Solange Dessimoulie decides to launch her own skin care brand – Cléor. Solange quickly recruits specialists to strengthen the Cléor products, including aromatherapist and physiotherapist Caroline Colliard.

1978 The first product, Aromessence™ is developed, a 100% pure natural beauty serum.

1983 Cléor becomes Decléor and development continues.

1988 Solange meets Graham Quinn and Graham Anthony begin distribution of the Decléor brand in Ireland.
