me strength By Claire Matthewman

Daily chores, extreme temperature differences, and poor nutrition can all have an impact on the growth of nails, but is there really anyway back to strong healthy nails once the damage has been done?

Well the simple answer is yes, because fortunately nails are pretty resilient to most things we do to them, but once they’ve been damaged it’s essential to nurture them back to health with the same care and attention you would with any other injury to your body.

As with any consultation, you should begin by asking your client specific lifestyle questions that may have an effect on the condition of their nails – does their job expose them to water/chemicals on a daily basis, have they recently had enhance- ments elsewhere that haven’t been applied and/or removed properly, or do they have a special dietary needs that could lead to limited vitamin intake?

It may seem obvious to you that these could be the key causes of damage to the nails but it’s likely your client has become

complacent with these lifestyle choices/ habits and don’t even realise that this is the root of their problems.

“Nail growth rate varies, but may be up to 3mm per week for fingernails and 1mm for toenails, with the whole fi ngernail being replaced two or three times per year, and the toenail every year to 18 months. The growth rate peaks in our early teens and then reduces with age. But it may increase again during pregnancy, the summer, or while we sleep,” explains Jane Foulston, Fae Major and Marguerite Wynne in The Art and Science of Beauty Therapy.

With this in mind, it’s easy to see how nails can effectively repair themselves over time, once the root of the problem has been identifi ed and a treatment program is put in place.
