Jacqueline Howarth MSc Conservation Biology

I always wanted to study at postgraduate level but I never previously found a course that was suitable. Living with my family in the South Lakes, meant that any course had to be relatively close to home as well.

I first graduated fourteen years ago and pursued my career whilst bringing up my family. Although my work was not connected to conservation biology, I always wanted to follow my dream to work in that field.

I am particularly fascinated by large mammals, especially bears, and wanted to carry out in-depth research. Prior to starting the course, I had spent lots of free time hiking in wilderness to seek them out.

This course has allowed me to indulge my passion. The team of lecturers includes a bear specialist so I have been able to study exactly what motivates me. For my dissertation, I am considering investigating the proposal to re-introduce brown bears into areas of Greece. The sector contacts my lecturers have make it easier to set up research of this type.

I would strongly recommend this course as staff and students think differently—I like the progressive thinking that is evidence. It will help me move into my new career once I graduate.
