Great careers start here …

Michael James Policing Studies

I’m a 41-year-old married man with a family. I was brought up on a farm, and after a brief spell working on the farm, I moved to a local printing firm then on to work as a sales representative, until in 1990 I joined the police. Thereafter I worked in uniform roles before joining a HQ-based project management department.

When I saw my course advertised, I went along to the information days and learned that access was simpler than I thought. The timing was right for me; I also found the cost was very reasonable and affordable. This course recognised some of my prior learning, transferring it into credits and reducing the amount of modules needed to complete the course. The main benefit though has been the personal and professional development.

The tutors are extremely helpful and engaging. Some use Skype to ensure

tutorials can take place at times that suit us both. The range of professionals in particular fields of study that dip in and out of the specific modules is very useful. The course design has a degree of flexibility though, so work and home-life can be balanced with a little effort. The majority of my study material is provided through the online portals or by way of email from tutors.

I’m probably a reasonable example of someone who hasn’t necessarily had a previous academic bent, but with the right motivation to do the work, have persevered and enjoyed it immensely. Within the police, medium term I’m considering further advancement, but in the short term my focus is on a top-up honours degree in September. Beyond that I’ll take advice on post-police career prospects and appropriate study routes.
