ITSU PROTECTS PROFITS INSTORE
London-based hospitality retailer itsu has become the fi rst in the UK to adopt new fraud management software from user activity management and monitoring provider, Overtis. The fresh food retailer and restaurant chain is using VigilancePro Retail to combat retail shrinkage, measure promotions, manage staff productivity and identify training requirements. The software integrates electronic point-of-sale (EPoS) and CCTV systems, creating a visual audit trail of all employee activity on tills. Alex Young, itsu commercial director at
itsu, told Retail Technology that the company had looked at several technology solutions to combat the industry-wide problem of till fraud.
“I was keen to fi nd a product that
could take us from the old approach, of the auditor looking at evidence of missing stock and move that on so that we could provide real-time alerts on potential losses,” he said. Running Torex tills and Intelliq data
mining fraud tools, the company also wanted visibility of EPoS activity in real time. “I saw a retail trade press release that described how VigilancePro Retail can provide real-time information and alerts on till activity, linked with CCTV, and contacted Overtis to fi nd out more,” continued Young. “VigilancePro Retail gives us a belt and braces approach to combating retail losses.”
He acknowledged that deployment
has been “a slower process than we fi rst imagined, because one of our specifi cations was that the Overtis software had to integrate with our existing tills and DVRs”. But he added: “We’re now starting to build up a dashboard of real-time alerts and to spot signs of losses that we want to prevent. From a business point of view we’ve been happy to wait because we believe that this is a phenomenal product.” Young concluded: “At this stage we
have only got VigilancePro Retail deployed in one store and we’re already compiling evidence of losses in real-time. It going to be pretty groundbreaking once we’ve got it deployed across the entire itsu estate. We plan to deploy it in all 30 stores and every store that we open thereafter will be using VigilancePro Retail.”

SCOTMID ENCRYPTS PAYMENT COMPLIANCE

payment processes and the potential costs of securing data across all electronic point-of-sale (EPoS) and related payment processing systems, Scotmid the largest independent co-operative in Scotland (headquarters pictured), decided to implement a new secure payment system that used P2PE. Scotmid looked into Ocius Sentinel from Commidea, which offers end-to- end encryption and tokenisation and was also the fi rst solution to gain Payment Application (PA) DSS approval. Ocius uses two strong cryptography techniques to dual encrypt the sensitive card data from the PIN Entry Device (PED) to Commidea’s PCI DSS level 1 certifi ed processing infrastructure, reducing the scope of PCI DSS compliance, as the merchant cannot access the data. cardholder data from Scotmid’s systems and encrypt transactions at the point of sale. The company’s EPoS systems and associated network could therefore potentially be taken outside of the scope of PCI compliance altogether. Following a recent acquisition, Scotmid has increased its implementation scope to 330 stores and nearly 1,000 devices, with the project due for completion in 2011. The company is also employing a small number of mobile devices for its funeral branches and mobile concessions, which are also managed by Ocius Sentinel. Previously SCOTMID was looking to spend a 7-digit fi gure to achieve and maintain compliance, but by using Commidea, Ocius Sentinel and security consultancy from the Foregenix Qualifi ed Security Assessors (QSA), this fi gure has been reduced several fold. The implementation has also improved services for customers through increased speed of transactions. As well as contactless payments,
SCOTMID is also considering additional customer interaction functionality such as customer surveys at the point of sale, PayPoint, e-Top-up and gift cards.
