Within one year of quitting her “real” job in 2009, her chainmaille pieces were being featured in national magazines and exhibitions – and were soon winning awards in juried art shows. Just last winter, Walilko took top honors at the British Bead Awards, an international competition where entries from around the world are judged for “excellence and originality” by prominent jewelry professionals. Her highly geometric “Unfoldings of the Implicate Order” took first place in the seed bead category, and her scale-maille wearable shrug – “I Come From the Future” – led the wire and chain maille category, representing a direction that clearly excites Walilko.


“I’m insanely competitive, even if it’s just with myself,” she said.


“Since I always have to


do the biggest, best piece possible I started making clothing. For the larger clothing pieces, like the chainmaille kimono I’m working on now, a thought will pop into my head about how cool it will look – and then the all-consuming project in my life becomes making that piece.”
