Inductors

application-specific design work with a focus onmilitary, medical, microwave and test &measurement applications."

Because inductor suppliers experienced a banner growth year in

2010, some don't expect as high a growth rate this year. "We won't see the phenomenal growth of last year but we will see single-digit growth," said Valletta.

Gowanda expects about 20 percent growth this year, compared

to 40+ percent growth in 2010, driven primarily bymilitary (night vision systems and communications) andmedical (MRI, implantable components, and robotic surgical equipment) applications.

New designs

One of Vishay'smost significant new inductor product introductions over the past year is the high-temperature version of its high-power IHLP series. The high- temperature rating allows the part to work at 155 deg C,making it well suited for automotive applications and anywhere the product has to operate in a high- temperature environment.

Vishay also is working on lower profile

inductors tomeet growing demand fromthe consumer electronics and computer sectors. Earlier this year, Vishay introduced two new IHLP low-profile, high-current inductors in the 1212 case size with ultra-low profiles of 1.2mmand 1.5mm. Other key specs include a high maximum1-MHz frequency and standard inductance values from0.22 to 1.0microhenries, and a low direct current resistance (DCR) down to 9.5milliohms typical.

Gowanda also has been working on shrinking

the size of its power inductors. The company's new surface-mount inductor series, the SMP1210S, combines high current, shielding and a small size with inductance values from 1.0 to 100microhenries and current ratings from205 to 1384mA DC. It also offers an operating temperature of -55 deg C to +125 deg C.

The SMP1210S is designed for use in power applications

including filters for DC/DC converters, switching regulated power supplies, and other power supply applications where high current handling capability, shielding and footprint size are key concerns.

Gowanda also plans to expand its line of non-magnetic

inductors. "There is a need for non-magnetic inductors because a lot ofmedical equipment that could be used in or nearMRI machines can't have anymagnetic components," said Kohlhagen.

Gowanda also recently earnedmil-approval for two series of RF inductors. The company earnedMIL-PRF-39010, LevelM,

Bourns' SRP4020 and SRP7030 power inductors deliver lower DC resistance and higher current ratings in an ultra-small package

More power products in smaller packages

Inductormanufacturers such as Taiyo Yuden and Bourns also have been working on bringing new power products tomarket over the past year.

For example, Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc.,

Taiyo Yuden offers two new wirewound power inductor series in smaller, thinner package sizes

Schaumburg, Ill., introduced the BRL2515 and BRFL2518 wirewound power inductors that claim industry-leading DC bias characteristics in a thinner and smaller size, measuring 2.5 x 1.5 x 1.2 mm and 2.5 x 1.8 x 1.0 mm, respectively. These low-profile power inductors are designed for DC-DC converter applications in products such as cell phones, smart phones, DSCs, and portable music players.

Similarly, Bourns introduced

two series of power inductors last year with advanced flat wire technology for lower DC resistance and higher current ratings in an ultra-small package.Models SRP4020 and SRP7030 target use in DC/DC converters formobile electronic devices and computers, as well as data storage and voltage regulatormodules. Other applications include servers, portable gaming devices, navigation systems, automotive electronics, and medical equipment.

TheModel SRP4020 features a small footprint of 4.8 x 4mm and a

2-mmheight. The device has an inductance range of 0.22 to 2.2 microhenries, with a heat rating current up to 10 A and a saturation current up to 15 A.Model SRP7030F also offers a compact footprint of 7.6 x 6.5mmin a 3.2-mmheight. The inductance range is 0.1 to 10microhenries, with a heat rating current up to 32 A and a saturation current up to 60 A.

"established reliability" certification for its ER10Mand ER17S series of through-hole devices. Approval requires extensive life testing across thermal, electrical, mechanical and environmental characteristics. Life testing is ongoing at Gowanda's in-house environmental testing lab until themore demanding failure rate level, Level R, is attained.
