Do you need help selecting the right wirewound resistor for your application? Vishay Intertechnology,Malvern, Pa., now offers a free online pulse energy calculator that helps designers select the right wirewound resistor for their application. Vishay's new Joule School online pulse energy calculator at www.vishay.com/resistors/pulse- energy-calculator allows designers to determine the energy of a pulse that could go through a resistor in their application.

Vishay said the calculator is well-suited for

selecting wirewound resistors for applications exposed to large pulses such as a capacitive charge/discharge or lightning surge, including phone towers, solar power systems,

Renesas Electronicswas the leading supplier of semiconductors to the automotive sector in 2010, ahead of Infineon Technologies, according to Semicast Research, London, England. Freescale Semiconductor, whichwas the leading supplier of automotive semiconductors formany years, dropped to fourth place behind STMicroelectronics, while Bosch gained one place tomove up to fifth.

Renesas Electronics held an estimated

market share of 11.0 percent in 2010, substantially ahead of second placed supplier, Infineon Technologies, which in 2010 had an estimatedmarket share of 7.9 percent. STMicroelectronicsmoved up one place to third largest supplier, with a share of 7.7 percent, while Freescale held a 5.8 percent share.Overall, the top ten leaderswere unchanged from2009, said Semicast.

Semicast says 2010was the strongest year

on record for the automotive semiconductor market, with sales increasing by an estimated 37 percent to $22.7 billion, up from$16.6 billion in 2009.

China remains one of themost significant

growth drivers of the automotive sector, with light vehicle production in China totaling almost 15million in 2010, double the level of 2008, said Semicast.

A new study fromthe IPC -- Association Connecting Electronics Industries forecasts that reporting requirements for conflict minerals proposed by the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) would cost the electronic interconnect industry an estimated $279million in the first year of implementation for due diligence alone, compared to the government's estimate of $16.5million. Recurring costs for interconnect companies are expected to total approximately $165million per year.

In July 2010, provisions requiring publically-

traded companies to report annually to the U.S. SEC if their products contain conflict minerals, i.e., tin, tantalum, gold, and tungsten, were included in Section 1502 of the Financial ReformBill (U.S. Public Law111-203).

Companies are required to identify the

country of origin of theminerals andwhether theminerals came frommines controlled by rebel parties, said IPC. Each companymust also submit a report on their due diligence.

The IPC study collected data from60

electronicsmanufacturing services (EMS) companies, printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers, materials suppliers and equipment suppliers.

The Joule School tool offers designers a

choice of three pulse types to calculate: square wave pulse, capacitive charge/discharge pulse, and exponentially decaying pulse. After selecting the pulse type, users enter the required variables for their application and click "Compute" to determine the pulse energy and average power. To help determine the best wirewound resistor tomeet the needs of their application, designers can then contact Vishay with the pulse information.
