The recent devastation in northeastern Japan onMarch 11 fromamonster earthquake and subsequent tsunami once again teaches us that while it's always easy to put a price tag onmaterial things, it's the damage to people, Japan's psyche, itself, that is immeasurable.
While the death toll and number ofmissing continue to rise, Japan is faced with
the added burden of trying to gain control of its damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. We hope the nation can avert further devastation and can begin to rebuild their homes and lives as quickly as possible.
As everything is relative, the outermost rings of this disaster are being felt by
Japan's economy and even farther out by the global electronics supply chain. Our look at how the disaster is impacting the global supply chain (pages 28-31) shows how vital Japan's electronicsmanufacturing industry is to the global economy.
I have now learned that two fabs -- Shin-Etsu's Shirakawa plant andMEMC's
Utsunomiya plant, which are both shutdown as a result of the quake -- supplies 25 percent of the global production of silicon wafers tomake semiconductors. This is expected to have a considerable impact on several types of ICs including DRAMs, NAND flashmemory, and logic ICs.
In addition,Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Hitachi Kasei Polymer account for 70
percent of the worldwide supply of the primarymaterial used tomake PCBs. Both companies report they will resume production of the copper-clad laminate (CCL) in the first week of April.
Thankfully, most companies report that their employees have not been injured. On a final note, I wish to thank our loyal readers for a fantastic first
