What is driving LCD design and development?


Displaymanufacturers are primarily driven to develop displays for high volume consumermarkets so thesemarkets often drive development and technology adoption, providing a precursor for industrial LCD displays. This does not however, preclude the development of some LCD display formats specifically for the industrialmarket. Buyers therefore need to ensure that their display of choice provides excellent optical performance, is inherently reliable and that continuity of supply can be ensured over the product lifetime.


What is the cost versus performance trade off today?


Industrial display purchasers should ensure that their chosen product can be sourced froma stablemanufacturerwho can offer product longevity and guaranteed supply. The continued emergence of new Chinese LCD vendors is influencing the global TFT supply chain. This increased competition in the TFTmarket is likely to lead to greater price erosion. As a result established Japanese and Taiwanese display brands are actively establishing technology partnerships to ensure they offer production efficiency and technology differentiation.

Howimportant is display readability?


The optical performance or readability of a display is defined by its brightness and contrast specifications. Graphical user interfaces need to be capable of displaying bright, vivid display images and information. Demand forwide viewing angle andwide field of vision displays has increased inmany embedded and industrial systems and contrast and colour characteristicsmust bemaintained over a range of viewing angles and positions.


What aboutwide viewing angle technologies?


In-plane switching (IPS), vertical alignment (VA) advanced fringe field switching (AFFS) are nowextensively used in consumer applications. In-plane switching TFT displaymodules overcome the limitations of conventional TFT display technology by providing a stable colour image fromany viewing angle, excellent colour saturation, colour stability and high contrast ratios. Industrial specification IPS displays are becomingmorewidely available.


Howbright should the display be?


At present the benchmark brightness specification for an industrial LCD display is 600cd/m². For sunlight readable applications this increases to 1000cd/m².White LED backlights have nowreplaced cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights inmany industrial LCD displaymodules as amore efficient, robust and safer backlight technology.
