Ed’s memo

Staying

requires your attention daily

After a speech one day, Zig Ziglar (top international speaker and author) was approached by someone in the audience who said: “Zig, it was a great speech, but motivation doesn’t last.” Zig replied said, “Bathing doesn’t either. That’s why I recommend it daily!”

From the news, and events around us, we have had occasion to see that 2011 is a year that is going to be full of surprises – some great, and some not so great.

How are we going to stay motivated with all the ups and downs of the coming months? This is a good question.

One answer is of course to work at it! As Zig Ziglar says, we have to find our sources, our inner buttons, our reasons to stay motivated on a daily basis!

It’s great if others motivates us, and feed our soul – but we cannot depend on

others to motivate us all the time. Sometimes, life at the office is a ‘bed of roses’; sometimes a ‘bed of thorns’. When it’s the latter, getting and staying motivated becomes a bit of a challenge, doesn’t it? I guess that’s what people refer to as discipline and determination – these two attributes work like inner batteries and they keep one going no matter what.

But like batteries, they may run out eventually if there is no return of joy and satisfaction with one’s job and environment.

This is when the need for dialogue and communication comes in.

Sometimes

management or co-workers are not aware that there is a need to address a problem or that a period of stress is too stretched out, or that their worries are affecting you! It then becomes incumbent on you to try and reveal your emotions and overcome the problem or situation before you ‘burn-out’.

The ideal outcome would be to have motivation restored and renewed.

It is

often said that we are the architects of our own happiness, so then it is also true that we can – to a large extent - be the architects of our own motivation.

I hope you enjoy this issue of CareerSuccess - and that it is also one of your sources of motivation!
