Feature 5 | ONBOARD ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS Scanship upgrades RCCL vessels

Scanship is working closely with the cruise line RCCL on a series of environmental upgrades.

L

ast year Scanship was awarded a contract to supply Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL)’s Voyager of the Seas with its

AWP wastewater treatment systems as a retrofit, and this project was completed in early 2011. Te installation features technology designed to handle the ship’s entire waste stream up to 60m3

/h and also treat pulper water from the existing food waste system. Subsequently Scanship has picked up two

more retrofit contracts for the same customer involving Explorer of the Seas, on which work is scheduled to begin in March 2011, and Mariner of the Seas, which is booked in for the following month. Te two installations are identical to the first, and similarly feature Scanship’s low maintenance, high reliability design of wastewater treatment technology.

Scanship is also going to retrofit the former

Hurtigruten cruise ferry Finnmarken with the AWP advanced wastewater treatment system for a charter in Australia. Installation of the equipment will begin onboard in mid-2011 while the ship is in service on an oil field outside Barrow Island, serving as an accommodation vessel for the regional offshore industry. Maersk supply vessel opts for PetroLiminator

More companies are buying green technologies, says Ensolve. U

SA-based Ensolve Biosystems has recently finished an installation, and succesfully completed a

trial period, aboard the anchor handling tug, Maersk Lancer, the first Maersk- owned vessel to install the company’s PetroLiminator oil water separator. Te PetroLiminator line is offered in a

modular design that allows for installation through existing hatches, thereby facilitating such retrofit work. Richard Penny, vice president

operations, said: “This system is truly a green technology as it both reduces waste by-products and it reduces ship’s operating costs.

The PetroLiminator

system actually consumes the emulsified oil, converting it to harmless bi-products rather than transferring it to another medium.” Ensolve says it is encouraged that many more companies are now considering environmental factors when making purchasing decisions. According to Mr Penny: “Ensolve is the only

company I am aware of that is willing to guarantee its operating costs and I believe this will help us move our products to market over the next few years. We are able to make this commitment because of our novel approach which reduces waste generation which subsequently reduces operating costs.” As well as the breakthrough Maersk

order, Ensolve has a number of other contracts in hand in both the marine and industrial sectors. SCRT

Environmental retrofits set to rise in future says ClassNK

Te Japanese classification society is helping to develop new technologies that will be suitable for ‘green’ upgrades.

retrofitting new environmental friendly systems on existing vessels. Te programme of works has included surveys and safety certifications on solar power generators, power cells and new type storage batteries; emulsion fuel supply systems; the conversion of boiler, fuel tanks, and piping for use of low sulphur fuel oils; and fitting exhaust gas

apan’s ClassNK has recently been involved in a number of projects converting current installations or

recirculation, integrated bilge treatment and ballast water treatment systems. As part of its proactive approach to

environmental refits, ClassNK has also established Environmental Guidelines and a new Environmental Awareness Notation for ships incorporating environmentally friendly features, or systems that surpass existing regulations or have yet to fall under their scope. Te society has furthermore released a new guideline on ballast water

management systems to help owners understand the rules, regulations and other factors when determining which system to install when the Ballast Water Management Convention is ratified. “With the ratification of this convention

on the horizon, the installation of ballast water management systems on existing vessels has become

an increasingly

important topic for shipowners, and we expect this type of retrofitting work will
