Feature 1 | CRUISE SHIP REPAIR AND REFITS Lloyd Werft picks up cruise contracts
TUI Cruises has placed a contract to refit a second vessel at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, while Phoenix Reisen is another confirmed customer.
M
ein Schiff 2, the second ship operated by TUI Cruises, will undergo an extensive upgrade at
Lloyd Werſt, following the yard’s successful conversion of Mein Schiff 1 in 2009. The company is due to take delivery of the vessel, previously Celebrity Mercury, in late February in Baltimore, USA, before sailing it over to Bremerhaven to be taken into the Lloyd Werſt drydock in mid-March.
It is reported that the total value of the
refurbishment work will be over €50 million and, as was the case with the earlier vessel, Mein Schiff 2 will be fitted with a significant number of additional outside cabins with balconies. Te hull of the ship will have a 340tonne ‘duck tail’ built on to it which will help to offset the weight of the new balconies and verandas. In addition, the fitness and spa areas will be extended, while the galley facilities
will be extensively upgraded. Lloyd Werſt has secured another cruiseship
project involving Phoenix Reisen’s 44,600gt Artania. Work on the vessel, which began life as the Royal Princess, will take five weeks, with redelivery scheduled toward the end of May 2011. Artania, was built originally in 1984 and was operated until recently by P&O Cruises as Artemis. Te vessel was refurbished at Lloyd Werſt in April 2010. SCRT
Competition steps up in the central Mediterranean
Competition for cruise ship work is intensifying in the Central Mediterranean region.

he large drydocks in the French port of Marseille are once again operational, following the signing
of a concession between the port authority and the Italian shipyard operator, San Giorgio del Porto (SGP). SGP started operating the drydocks 8 and 9 last October and since then cruise ship work has been a mainstay of the operation. Six out of the seven contracts handled by the company during its first 60 days of occupation were for cruise vessels. Another Italian company which has
expanded the scale and scope of its business in recent times is Palumbo, which has added the drydocks in Malta to its existing facilities in Naples and Messina. Last year Palumbo docked ten cruise ships in Italy and Malta, carrying out a wide range of work, including cabin refits and hull coating with silicone paints. The company says it already has a significant cruise ship orderbook stretching through 2011 and into 2012.
