parameters such as pH, alkalinity and hardness, to inhibit corrosion and control scaling.

In contrast to

traditional methods, EnwaMatic is based on filtering and treating water using minerals balancing techniques, the removal of oxygen and neutralising the water. In an important development, the

chemical free EnwaMatic system has obtained approval from the Finnish engine manufacturer Wärtsilä. One of the most critical parameters for

maritime engine efficiency and life time is internal corrosion. The EnwaMatic Maritime water treatment unit provides effective dirt and air separation with environmental ly sound

water conditioning, the

company says, pointing out that the recent approval follows test running on a Wärtsilä unit for 16,378 engine hours. SCRT

DNV certifies Headworks technology

Te USA-based Headworks Bio has announced that its CleanSea Shipboard Wastewater Treatment System has received certification from Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

T

his certification follows successful testing of the CleanSea system to verify that the effluent produced

by the system meets MEPC 159(55) regulations. Tese regulations stipulate that the effluent has met or exceeded certain characteristics, verified over a 10 day period. Te Headworks Bio CleanSea system was shown to produce high quality effluent with all parameters under the maximums by 30-90%, the company states. “The DNV certification strengthens our position as a leader in the shipboard

wastewater treatment market,” said Michele LaNoue, president and chief executive. “Tis is a rigorous third-party verification that our systems meet and exceed international standards.” At the core of the CleanSea system, is

a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) treatment process that employs thousands of virgin polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated wastewater treatment process. It is this high-density population of bacteria that achieves a high rate of biodegradation within the system, while also offering

other benefits, such as process reliability at sea and ease of operation. The CleanSea shipboard wastewater

treatment systems is designed to deliver effluent quality surpassing the world’s most stringent marine discharge standards combined with what Headworks claims is the lowest lifecycle treatment costs in the industry. Using marine grade components, CleanSea technology has environmental capabilities that have been specifically set up to meet the tough requirements of long-term shipboard operation, the company points out.
