Spain’s Navantia shipyard group is staking its claim to be the world’s busiest repair yard when it comes to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market.

Other repeat customers, which use Navantia mainly to service vessels trading in the Atlantic region, include Anglo Eastern Ship Management, BP Shipping, Exmar,
V.Ships, Hyproc Shipping, BW Gas, K Line and NYK LNG. Projects for these clients included a number of major refits and substantial repairs, covering the vessels’ steam propulsion units, cargo containment systems, cryogenic equipment, system and equipment tests, as well as mechanical repairs, structural renewals and surface treatment. The level of gas tanker work in 2011 is
expected by Navantia to be similar to 2010 levels. Te year has got off to a positive start with four LNG vessels docking at Ferrol in January and one at the Cadiz yard in the same period. Navantia Shiprepairs has recently made

avantia Shiprepairs carried out a total of 30 LNG carrier projects in 2010, a stunning 25% increase compared
the services provided to LNG fleets operating in the Atlantic. Investments made in 2010 included the construction of new cryogenic workshops, equipped for the overhaul and repair of various kinds of cryogenic equipment, pumps and valves, and also training programmes for the yards’ personnel
in LNG related work and procedures. At Ferrol, Navantia decided to develop
its existing cryogenic area, which used to be part of its mechanical workshop, and last year completed the construction of a fully segregated cryogenic facility, which is now in operation. Tis new workshop offers more
