space and improved cryogenic facilities, and it also includes new equipment such as a 20tonne gantry crane, a 1tonne cargo boom for use in connection with the vacuum test tank, new hydraulic platforms up to a 6m range, and a number of other specific tools. All of this is available within an atmosphere controlled environment, thanks to the new climatisation equipment that has been installed. Over the past year Navantia has also

established further agreements with specific LNG equipment manufacturers, including

companies producing cryogenic

safety

and boiler valves, to provide maintenance services for such equipment, and has adapted its facilities to offer an extended range of services on site. Tese facilities, and the new cryogenic workshop, have also been designed to accommodate the overhaul of bigger cryogenic pumps from LNG regasification terminals, four of which were already repaired and overhauled in Ferrol in 2010. Navantia has

similarly carried out substantial investments in the Cadiz yard to

ensure it remains an alternative option for the company’s LNG clients, complementing the main LNG ship repair centre located in Ferrol. Tis has included additional training for staff and the completion of a new cryogenic workshop, complete with all the necessary tools and equipment. A number of staff have also been sent to GTT’s training facilities in France in order to be certified to carry out membrane LNG repairs. Tis certification has been obtained and is now in force, Navantia states. SCRT

More LNG orders for Harris Pye Gulf

Dubai-based Harris Pye Gulf continues to benefit from contacts in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping sector.

Gas Shipping Company (NGSCO) of Abu Dhabi. Te company will carry out complete superheater renewals, including the supply of section tube materials, fabrication and installation, on LNG Mubaraz, LNG Mraeh, LNG Al Hamrah and LNG Al Asthan, while they are docked at Drydocks World Dubai. Work on the first two vessels has recently been completed and the remaining two are expected in April 2011. Another recent project for Harris Pye

H

Gulf involved the Al Deebel, for MOL LNG Transport. In this case the scope of work included the renewal of the economiser and generating tubes. Te company has

also

been working on the FSRU Livorno for MHI / Saipem, again at Drydocks World Dubai, partially re-tubing the main propulsion boiler superheaters, using units manufactured from upgraded stainless steel materials. Furthermore over

the last 12 months

Harris Pye Gulf has completed a number of contracts for Qatar Gas, as well as MOL, K Line, NYK, Oman Gas and Exmar Shipping, all involving work to the main propulsion boilers on their LNG ships. While much of its LNG related work

has been carried out in conjunction with Drydocks World Dubai, Harris Pye Gulf staff have also attended to LNG ships at a number of other locations. These have included vessels offshore Fujairah and Ras al Khaimah, at the Dubai anchorage, and in Cadiz, Spain.

28 Te current year has got off to a promising

start for Harris Pye Gulf and the company reports it is, for example, working on some additional contracts for boiler work on a number of Qatar LNG ships. Malcolm Jordan, managing director,

said: “We

have seen our LNG related repair activity proceeding much the same as 2010 with similar levels of business.Te normal factors, such as necessity and class requirements, play a part in owners and managers deciding to make repairs outside the normal docking requirements, but market conditions also have a major influence on such decisions. Rates are improving and there is presently a shortage of carrying capacity tonnage, so more money is available for upgrades and refurbishment.”

To support its growing workload

in the LNG sector, and other markets, Harris Pye Gulf has moved into purpose built workshop and office premises at Emirates Industrial City in Sharjah and is in the process of opening up a branch office in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the company is in discussions with Oman Drydock Company (ODC) with the aim of becoming a prime contractor at its new docking facility, and has entered into a MOU with Qatar Navigation, with a view towards establishing preferred contractor status with the Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine facility at Ras Laffan. Both of these yards are expected to be much more heavily involved in LNG carrier work over the coming years. SCRT
