Eastern Michigan University lost a dear friend when Theodore “Ted” Tangalakis died Jan. 13. He was 94. Tangalakis opened Campus Drugs on Cross Street in 1946 and quickly adopted EMU as his own—and we returned the sentiment. He was a surrogate father to generations of EMU students, even those who didn’t know his last name. He was just “Ted.” Gracious, humble, friendly. He touched thousands of lives with his warmth and generosity, and his boundless love for our campus community will never be forgotten. Alumni wishing to express condolences may post a message on the legacy website, which can be reached by visiting emich.edu/memoriam/ttangalakis.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Matina; children George (Linda McGill), Cerene Efftehia, and Dean (Claudia); four grandchildren Theo (Autumn) Tangalakis, Angela (Steve) Normand, Kali Tangalakis and Michael Tangalakis; and one great grandson, John Mercer Johnson IV. Thank you for sharing him with us.
