In Memoriam: Garion H. Campbell (BA51) E
astern Michigan alumnus and E-Club Athletic Hall
of Fame member Garion H. Campbell Sr. died Sept. 30, 2009. He was 83. Campbell was born Jan. 8, 1926 to Charles H. and Helen E. Campbell (Covington) in Monroe. An outstanding track runner at Monroe High School and Michigan State Normal College, he set both American and World Track records. He competed in the 1948 Olympic Track Trials and was inducted into the EMU E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.
He was employed as a
teacher and counselor in Ann Arbor Public Schools until his retirement in 1986. While attending college,
Campbell met and married Maxine M. Preston in February 1950. They had three children: Garion H. Jr. of Rosarito, Mexico; Mark P. of Toledo, Ohio; and Mardi E. of Chula Vista, Calif. Campbell also was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. All survive him.
