Around Campus

conversation A Conversation with Reggie Barnes by Chris Azzopardi

Reggie Barnes couldn’t have come to EMU at a better time—the fall of 2010, when controversy surrounded a cartoon printed in the school’s independent newspaper, Eastern Echo. As director of diversity and community involvement, he saw the cartoon, featuring Ku Klux Klan members, as an opportunity for change. His position oversees four divisions—Center for Multicultural Affairs, LGBT Resource Center, Women’s Center and VISION—with one common goal: Bringing them, and everyone else on campus, together.

Eastern: How would you describe your position?

Barnes: It gives me the opportunity to work with four different offices to create a bridge between the areas to serve the University community beter. I’m taking the opportunity to galvanize all of the different areas, resources and relationships and contribute to what’s already been taking place.
