Teaching Excellence Personified Alumni reflect on their favorite instructors

ftentimes, when we realize—almost overwhelmingly—how much our teachers have done for us, we find ourselves at a loss for a sufficient ‘Thank you.’ These quotes, taken from letters of nomination and support for the Teaching Excellence Awards, reveal a few ways Eastern’s alumni have chosen to express gratitude.

O

Mary L. Brake professor, engineering technology

“As a member of the doctoral program faculty, professor Brake constantly engaged

our interest and challenged us to think critically. She has always exhibited an abiding passion for her field, coupled with a masterful grasp of her subject mater.”

—Kaninika Bhatnagar, (PhD08) assistant professor, College of Technology

Angela L.J. Hwang professor, accounting and finance

“Dr. Hwang is an amazingly bright, kind and compassionate professor who cares

about her students and exemplifies all the qualities of excellence in the teaching profession. Every second of her class has a specific purpose. She allows students to think on their own and stimulates interest, both with her tremendous grasp of the subject matter and with the real-world examples included in her lectures.”

— Andrew Romanowski, graduate student, accounting

Ted J. Ligibel professor, historic preservation, geology and geography

“Dr. Ligibel is a tireless advocate for his students, the Historic Preservation

Program and EMU. Any time he is asked to represent the University, he does so with pride and enthusiasm. The bond Dr. Ligibel creates with his students as a professor, advisor, mentor and friend is unmatched.”

— Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association, Historic Preservation Alumni Chapter

Sheila M. Most professor, English language and literature

“As a result of Most’s class, my mind became more stimulated and open, as

well as my interactions with those of different races. Her informative lectures and teaching style helped eliminate racial prejudices and misconceptions. After I finished her class, I felt more educated, well-informed and empowered, and I went on to research topics I had learned.”

— Orenda Zegrean (BS07) by Leah Shutes
