SOUTHWEST
As part of the Southwest Region’s continuing commitment to youth development in multisport, 2011 brings with it two exciting opportunities for triathletes ages 12 to 19 — the Southwest Region F1 Series and the Southwest Region Talent ID/Development Series.

New for 2011 is the introduction of the SW Region F1 Series. The four-race series will help transition young triathletes from the entry-level youth or kids race format into draft-legal youth elite and junior elite competition. Athletes between the ages of 12 and 17, as of Dec. 31 of the competition year, are eligible to compete in the series. The distances for the swim, bike and run will be approximately 250-400 meters, 7-10k and 2-2.5k, respectively. The swim is in open water and the bike leg is draft-legal.

The Triathlon Club of San Diego will be directing three of the four series races. Race dates for events happening on Fiesta Island, near San Diego, Calif., are: March 20, April 3 and May 15. The F1 Series championship will be held in Pacific Grove, Calif., on Sept. 10. Athletes competing in the F1 series will earn ranking points toward the series championship title and awards will be provided to the overall male and female in two age categories: 12-14 and 15-17.

In addition to the F1 series, the Southwest Region’s Talent ID/ Development Series continues with a 10-event calendar of non-drafting races. As in years past, athletes earn series points at each event with double points earned at the series championships. Updated rankings will be tabulated throughout the series to provide racers an up-to-date snapshot of the series leaders.
