Swim Smart, Bike Strong, Run Tough
By Melanie Justice, age 14

The frigid water on my skin, intense wind in my face and thunderous cheers were worth the pride as I crossed the finish line. It was my third triathlon, but I was ready. I had my race number branded on my arm in Sharpie and my motivation written on my wrist: Swim Smart. Bike Strong. Run Tough. Adrenaline surged through my veins and excitement pounded in my heart. I was waiting to start and every second seemed like an hour. Anticipation slows the clock.

I ambled into the water slowly, for fear of being trampled. It’s unavoidable; kids will do anything to win. I had feet kicking my body, fingers clawing at my arms, and water gushing into my mouth. I felt like I was thrown into a washing machine. Stroke after stroke I struggled, but after what seemed like the longest swim of my life, I caught sight of the flagged shore. I hauled myself out of the water and onto the beach. The colorful flags slowly flew past me as I made my way to my bike.

I knew it could only get better from here. Cycling is in my blood. I was ready to kill it. I pushed my legs to their limit. The ride was beautiful. I was trying to focus on my race, but I couldn’t help but take in the colorful houses, curious spectators, and funny, random scenery. Once I noticed my attention was being averted from my race, I was motivated to go even faster.
