MIDEAST
The Mideast Regional Council has been hard at work finalizing the Mideast Region Club Race Series (MERCRS) for 2011.

MERCRS is an annual race series for clubs where the mission is to encourage the multisport lifestyle and grow our sport by promoting USA Triathlon registered clubs and USAT sanctioned regional events. MERCRS is organized and sponsored to encourage racing and friendly competition among USAT registered clubs within the region.

At stake is nothing less than regional bragging rights, big prize money and the coveted traveling trophy awarded to the team that accumulates the most team points over the annual series. The Regional Council surveyed participating clubs’ thoughts on the series and made changes where necessary.

These changes will make it easier for all clubs in the region to participate in the series. Some of these changes include a longer season starting on April 15 and ending on Nov. 1, top prize purse of $1,000, and five double-point races. If your club has participated in the past, we thank you and welcome you back. If your club has yet to participate, we hope you will join us and the other clubs, who have said the series is great for camaraderie and team spirit. To get started, go to www.usatmideast.com to find rules and scoring info and to see the rest of the changes to the series. Then it’s time to start racing!

Mideast Region athletes will have the opportunity to compete for a top prize of $1,000 in the 2011 Mideast Club Race Series.

MIDWEST
This year, the Midwest Region is hosting a USA Triathlon Junior Select Camp in Des Moines, Iowa, July 17-21. Select Camps are designed to serve the more experienced, competitive junior athletes within USAT. These camps focus on helping athletes get a better understanding of draft-legal racing and improving other key racing skills, including efficient transitioning and bike handling. Extra emphasis is placed on nutrition and sports science, as well as developing training programs that balance the demands of high school athletes with their involvement in triathlon.

This year, the Midwest Select Camp will be a great learning experience for athletes participating in the inaugural Hy-Vee IronKids series. The series will conclude with the U.S Championship in West Des Moines, Iowa in September 2011.

“The Hy-Vee IronKids Triathlon Series will be a game-changer for triathlon in the Midwest,” said Jenny Weber, the Midwest Regional Athlete Development Coordinator. “Thousands more kids and families will be introduced to the healthy aspects of this sport. We can reach so many kids — those who just want to participate and have fun and those who want to compete at the highest achievable level. I look for the next generation of Olympic-level triathletes to be from the Midwest.”

The Midwest Region is excited to provide a competitive education program around an event that supports a more participatory youth event allowing all youth an environment to thrive in. For more information on the USAT Junior Select Camp in Des Moines, Iowa, contact Jenny Weber at jenny@getzoomperformance.com.

More kids in the Midwest Region will be introduced to triathlon this season through the Hy-Vee IronKids Triathlon Series.
