Sharing the Win
Dear USA Triathlon Members,


As I write this I am eight days into my tenure as the new CEO of USA Triathlon, and I feel like a very lucky guy. We have a very talented, dedicated and committed staff who I am further challenging to better serve our broad constituency. With regard to our Board of Directors, one would be hard pressed to find a collection of more passionate, engaged and sage stewards. Race directors, there would be no triathletes without you, and I thank you for your entrepreneurial spirit that enables members to have many options to fully experience our sport.


On my first day on the job I went to a meeting of the Rocky Mountain Tri Club (a very impressive club). During the meeting several members told their “story” — the how and why they got into the sport. Each story was different, but all were captivating. One person was motivated primarily by meeting dating prospects, one was a burned-out and oft-injured marathoner who is now much healthier and more balanced and another relayed the story about how she could not even run a mile when she got swept into the club community. The club inspired her progression from a 15-minute miler into a “butt-kicking,” 70.3-racing, 9-minute miler. In short, I am confident that many of you can relate to the spirit, camaraderie and passion that was evident in that room; feelings that are just not shared by our single-sport brethren.


While we all came to the sport for different reasons — a transformational life change, social opportunities, part of a fitness enthusiast’s repertoire or primarily to satisfy the need to compete, we all have at least one thing in common — a first race.


Do you remember yours?


Imagine if you could bottle the elation you felt at the finish line and then unleash that bottle when needed to face life’s challenges. A key aspect of my role is to harness this emotion and to provide value to our constituent groups whether they are age-groupers, sponsors, race directors, coaches, regions, clubs, officials, ITU racers or volunteers. In order to do so we have recently launched a rallying cry for 2011, SHARING THE WIN.


What this means is that USA Triathlon’s burning imperative is to enable “wins” in the broadest sense — wins on the international podiums, wins by helping our sponsors, wins by providing better service to race directors and wins by inspiring individuals to embrace the lifestyle and complete their first sprint triathlon.
